Hadassah Minneapolis New Year’s Mum Plant Sale

mums.pngEvery fall, Hadassah Minneapolis highlights Rosh Hashanah with our annual Mum Plant Sale. This event is the centerpiece of our fundraising projects, providing the opportunity to send sweet New Year’s wishes to family and friends with the purchase of a colorful 14”-tall mum plant. If you have been a fortunate recipient of this gift in the past, now is the time to reciprocate or you can donate a plant to a Sholom Home Resident who has no family. The funds we raise from this project will go to the Hadassah Medical Organization hospitals, located on Mount Scopus and Ein Kerem in Israel. Your commitment and support for this project will provide much needed funding to keep these state-of-the-art hospitals operating on a daily basis, as well as raising money to continue our cutting-edge research.

The Plant Sale Committee is excited to announce that the plants will be a little larger and fuller than the previous year. The heart of this event involves many gracious volunteers who deliver these beautiful plants and who love seeing the joy on each recipient's face.

Please help Hadassah Minneapolis make this year’s plant sale momentous by spreading the good will and sweetness of the new year with your plant orders. Please consider the mitzvah of becoming a volunteer driver, which is desperately needed this year, to make this fundraising endeavor a complete success. If anyone can volunteer their garage to house the plants, that would be very much appreciated as well. Watch for our flyers in mid-August to place your plant orders, and check the box to help with deliveries if you can. Click here to order on-line and here to view or download the order form. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact Shelly Levine at 612-597-3349  or shellyilevine@msn.com.

Gail Rosenblum to Speak at our Chapter Program Next Month

The program will take place at 7 p.m., at Knollwood Place Apartments in St Louis Park, at a cost of $10 per person, free to Knollwood Place residents. Rosenblum will discuss how the section got started, the reasons why it was begun, and the response it has received. She also will discuss the recent trends towards “good news” sections of newspapers.

Look for your flyer in the mail for more details, and how to register. You also can view the flyer on-line by clicking here. For more information, e-mail Phyllis Harris at thebestbubbie1@gmail.com.

Craft Co-op at Knollwood Place on September 10th!

The Craft Co-op will be offering beautiful items for sale at the event at Knollwood Place on September 10. With Rosh Hashanah only a couple of weeks after the program, it's a great time to purchase a gift or add to your own collection. Perhaps you are in need of a new apron? Could your bathroom use an embroidered towel? Or maybe you'd like to show off some new jewelry or a tote bag? We've got all that and much more. (Our items make great Chanukah and baby gifts, too!)

As always, all proceeds go directly to Hadassah Hospitals. We accept cash, check or credit card. Remember, if you'd like to purchase something but can't wait until our next event, call Sara Bernstein (Hadassahcraftcoop@gmail.com or 612-790-9067) or Debby Wolk (debhadassah@gmail.com  or 612-925-7932) to arrange a private showing.

Fundraising -- It’s Time to Show your Support!

In a few weeks, many of you will receive a letter from your Hadassah Minneapolis Chapter. We’ll ask you to help Hadassah with a generous donation.

National Hadassah is committed to renovating and expanding Hadassah Hospital’s 65-year-old Round Building, to providing more operating rooms and patient beds, updating medical equipment, and strengthening the building’s infrastructure. This capital campaign, called “360 Degrees of Healing,” is underway, but a successful outcome depends upon Hadassah members’ financial help.

At the same time, Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) medical professionals are committed to providing outstanding medical care to all – regardless of race or religion. HMO researchers are working on medical advances, many of which may touch you or someone you know.

When you receive your annual solicitation for funds, please be generous. Lives are depending on us. If you have any questions about the Minneapolis Hadassah annual solicitation, HMO, or the “360 Degrees of Healing” campaign, visit www.hadassah.org or contact Stacey Bush (staceyrbush@gmail.com) or Linda Ward (ward4858@yahoo.com).

Book Chavurot

The Night Club Bookclub usually meets the first Thursday of every month, which is August 1 this month, at the Plymouth Library, 15700 36th Ave. N. at 7 p.m. in the Conference Room along the far-right wall when you walk into the Library. The book we will be discussing is The Madwoman Upstairs: A Novel by Catherine Lowell. If you enjoy reading as much as we do and would love to meet a wonderful group of women for a fun evening please don’t hesitate to contact Shelly Levine at 612-597-3349 or shellyilevine@msn.com.

The Henrietta Szold book group is a lively bunch of men and women who meet at 1 p.m. on the 4th Wednesday of every month in the Knollwood Place Apartments boardroom. Our book list is varied, and all the book titles chosen are available in regular and large print, audio, and downloadable formats with many copies in the Library system. Many of our participants use the volunteer delivery system offered by the Hennepin County Libraries. While not everyone finishes reading each of our titles, we have great discussions based on the themes in each book. The book for August 28 will be Every Note Played by Lisa Genova, a novel about a concert pianist who becomes increasingly paralyzed due to ALS. Please feel free to join us! If you are not on our contact list, call Debby Wolk at 612-925-7932 or e-mail her at tzvibo@aol.com for more information.

Walking Group

We’ve lost track of how many years our walking group has been together but we still love it! Walkers come and walkers go as the group fits their needs and schedules. Our philosophy is the more the merrier, so we’d love to have you join us. During the summer, we make use of the different paths and lakes available to us. Please join us! We meet at 10:30 on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and walk for about an hour. For more information, contact Terry Hallfin at terryhallfin@gmail.com.

Ronald McDonald House Is Looking for Your Help

Hadassah has been serving meals every Thursday at the Ronald McDonald House on the University of Minnesota campus (East Bank) for over 30 years. We’ve had captains and teams preparing, warming and serving up to 100 people--patients and their families, all this time quietly fulfilling a Hadassah mission of helping to heal and support the sick here at “home.” We have lost several teams for various reasons and need more teams, so we are reaching out and asking you to step up, pitch in, and have fun at the same time. Tasks include cooking on site or providing cooked food that is purchased from a professional resource such as Costco, Sam’s Club, Cub, etc., delivering the meal to the House and providing servers to dish up, clean up, and smile with good cheer and well wishes to family, staff, and most of all the patients undergoing treatment in nearby University hospitals. Talk to one of our captains, Terry Hallfin at 763-588-5597 or e-mail her at terrybmn@visi.com to find out how you can be a part of this worthwhile endeavor. Ronald is waiting to hear from you. Don’t think about it -- just give it a try!

Interested in Crafting or Fiber-Arts Get-Togethers?

We are considering a new chavura for crafters and those who want to be. If you knit, crochet, sew, build with popsicle sticks or do any other creative projects, this group is for you. All skill levels are welcome! This will be brand new, so please send your thoughts, interest level, and meeting suggestions to Melissa Murphy at emailmlbm@gmail.com.

Perpetual Yahrzeits at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem

When a loved one dies, please consider directing memorial gifts to Hadassah. The spirit of your family member or friend will live on in the lives that you help to enrich and to save! All donations will be promptly acknowledged to the donor and provided to the family of the deceased. A “Perpetual Yahrzeit” can be purchased with a one-time contribution of $1000. Kaddish will be said annually in the Abbell Synagogue at the Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem. Advance yahrzeits can be purchased at any time for yourself or a loved one.  We Americans are culturally deprived when it comes to death and dying.
