Education Program Preview
Hadassah Minneapolis, Hadassah St. Paul and Hadassah Upper
Midwest Region are planning an exciting and thought-provoking program on
Protecting Health Care Data in Our High-Tech World, November 11. We will learn from a panel of leading experts
in the fields of medicine, health law, cyber security, and information
technology, as they discuss issues that are important to all of us.
Some of the questions they will address include:
• How is our medical data being safeguarded?
• What are some of the risks and benefits of modern health care technology?
• How common is fraud and identity theft through the hacking of personal health data?
• What is being done to insure the cyber security of modern medical devices?
• How do we avoid medical scams?
• Can you trust commercial DNA testing companies?
• Is it safe to share personal information in social media health support groups?
• What laws are in place to protect us?
Do YOU have other questions you’d like answered or issues
you want to know more about? To enter your comments or
questions, click here. We will pass them on to the panel to consider including in the discussion.
Cultural Clique
The Cultural Clique will not be meeting in September due to all the Jewish Holidays. In October, we encourage people to attend the play The Great Society at the History Theater in St. Paul. The sequel to All the Way, which we saw last year, the play begins when Lyndon B. Johnson has just been re-elected and depicts his fall from grace. The show runs October 6-28 with group rates available for 10 or more people. As a group, we could go on Sunday October 21 at 2:00 p.m. If you are interested in attending in the group, RSVP to Sarene Silver at ssilver125@aol.com or (763) 544-4012 by September 7th as tickets are limited.
Book Chavurot
The Night Club Bookclub meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. Our next gathering will be September 6 in the Plymouth Library. 15700 36th Avenue N. We’ll be in the second room, the conference room on the far-right wall. We will discuss Nine Essential Things I’ve Learned About Life by Harold Kushner. In October, we'll discuss Someone is Watching by Joy Fielding. We always welcome new members. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Shelly Levine at shellyilevine@msn.com or 612-597-3349.
The next gathering of the Afternoon Book Group is at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, September 17. This is not our normal meeting day due to the Holidays. We meet at the Plymouth Library: 15700 36th Avenue N., in the small meeting room along the far-right wall. Our September book is The Gilded Years: A Novel by Karin Tanabe. The October book is Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah. We welcome new members. Questions? Contact Sue Garnett, 952-545-1435 or at nettgar1@gmail.com.
The Henrietta Szold book group is a lively bunch of men and women who meet at 1 p.m. on the 4th Wednesday of every month in the Knollwood Place Apartments boardroom. Note: we will skip September because the Holidays will take up a good portion of the month. Our book list is varied and all the book titles chosen are available in regular and large print, audio, and downloadable formats with many copies in the Library system. Many of our participants use the volunteer delivery system offered by the Hennepin County Libraries. While not everyone finishes reading each of our titles, we have great discussions based on the themes in each book. The book for October 24 will be The Muralist: A Novel by Barbara Shapiro. Please feel free to join us. If you are not on our contact list, call Debby Wolk at 612-925-7932 or e-mail her at tzvibo@aol.com for more information.
It's Fundraising Time!
Fundraising
is more important than ever for Hadassah Minneapolis. We help support Hadassah
Hospital’s life-saving work – all done without regard to race or religion - and
cutting-edge research that seeks new treatments (or cures!) for breast cancer,
MS, Alzheimer’s disease and other diseases.
Donating to Hadassah Minneapolis is easier than ever! Instead of a Spring and Fall
Solicitation, we’ve combined them into just one Solicitation, scheduled for
delivery to your home after Rosh Hashana! We hope you’ll give generously.
(You’ll still receive various fundraising letters from National
Hadassah.) YOU DON'T NEED TO WAIT TO DONATE! Commit to Hadassah with a generous donation at any time. For more information, contact fundraising vice presidents Stacey Bush (staceyrbush@gmail.com) or Linda Ward (ward4858@yahoo.com).
Ronald McDonald House Is Looking for Your Help
Hadassah has been serving meals every Thursday at the Ronald
McDonald House on the University of Minnesota campus (east bank) for 30 some
years. We’ve had captains and teams preparing, warming and serving up to 100 people--patients
and their families, all this time quietly fulfilling a Hadassah mission of
helping to heal and support the sick here at “home.” We have lost several teams for various
reasons and need more teams, so we are reaching out and asking you to
step up, pitch in, and have fun at the same time. Tasks include cooking on site or providing
cooked food that is purchased from a professional resource such as Costco,
Sam’s Club, Cub, etc., delivering the meal to the House and providing servers
to dish up, clean up, and smile with good cheer and well wishes to family,
staff, and most of all the patients undergoing treatment in nearby University
hospitals. Talk to one of our captains, Terry
Hallfin at 763-588-5597 or e-mail her at terrybmn@visi.com
to find out how you can be a part of this worthwhile endeavor. Ronald is waiting to hear from you. Don’t think about it -- just give it a try!
Membership
Why do you belong to Hadassah? Is it to connect with our Jewish community? Is it for the social aspect? Do you support the medical research at Hadassah hospitals? How
about the all advocacy in the area of women’s health and other concerns that
Hadassah is involved in? There are so many reasons to belong to Hadassah. Hadassah connects Jewish women and empowers them to effect change through advocacy, advancing health and well-being, and support of Israel. Our members, from every congressional district in the
nation, are activists, fundraisers and visionaries. They don’t just talk.
Hadassah women DO. If you go to www.hadassah.org and go to Take Action along the red menu across the top, you will find all the ways you can get involved in the area of advocacy that is meaningful to you.
Did you know that you can gift an annual membership to someone for only $36?
For membership questions, contact Terry Hallfin at terrybmn@visi.com or Rosa Liberty at librp68@gmail.com.
Walking Group
Wanted: New walkers for the walking group! The more the
merrier! The only qualification is that
you want to walk for an hour or so on Tuesday and Thursday morning from 10:30
to 11:30. An e-mail is sent weekly to
let you know where we are walking for the week. We walk outside unless the weather is bad. In that case, we walk inside.
For more information, contact
Terry Hallfin at terrybmn@visi.com.
