HADASSAH FOOTBALL CHALLENGE  - $10 AND A DREAM!

football.jpg

Once again, it's time for the Rochester Hadassah Janet Wagner Football Challenge – named in honor of our past, incredibly dedicated chair of many years. Through this 30+ year fundraiser, thousands of dollars were raised for our Hadassah projects in Israel. We need your support to continue with this successful annual initiative.

Here's how it works. You buy or sell the tickets at $10 each. Return the top portion of the form to Margie Wiseman, 1761 Highland Ave, 14618. We match you randomly with teams. If they win, you win $$. Winners will be contacted by our treasurer.

It's so easy and your $10 purchase will help us keep the Hadassah dream alive. Questions? Want tickets? Contact Monika Katzel, 203-1200, lesterkatzel@earthlink.net or Marilyn Rosen, 585-461-4684 or marilyn.rosen@gmail.com

 HADASSAH PICNIC UPDATE

It was a wonderful picnic! In spite of the heat, a lovely afternoon was had by all. It was nice to see new faces and to taste everyone's contributions to our cookout. A big THANK YOU to our Grill Meisters, who worked in 98 degree heat to keep us fed: Gary Steinberg, Bruce Green, Frank Karbel and Michael Miller. Cheers to Marla Miller and Emily Fishman for co-chairing this fun event and to Marcia Gabrilove Ladin for her tremendous support. We'll plan this again for next year.

 ROCHESTER HADASSAH SCHOOL MITZVAH PROGRAM

backpack-school-supplies-drive.jpg

In another month, it's back to school for our area students, ready to work and learn. Unfortunately, many will come lacking the tools necessary for classroom participation. WE CAN HELP – by buying school supplies for the kids at Rochester School #3. Use those August back-to-school coupons to purchase paper, folders, notebooks, pencils, pens, markers and art supplies. New or gently used pleasure reading books are always appreciated.

Bring your donations to Hadassah meetings/events, to me, or call for a pickup. The students and teachers are so grateful for all your gifts, that allow the kids to be prepared for this school year.

YOUTH ALIYAH/CHILDREN AT RISK UPDATE

The women of Hadassah remain deeply involved in helping to support the three youth villages: Meir Shfeyah located in the Carmel Mountains near Zichron Ya'akov, Ramat Hadassah Szold Youth Village southeast of Haifa, where 70 percent of the residents come from Ethiopian or former Soviet Republic backgrounds, and Hadassah Neurim, between Netanya and Moshav Beit Yanai.
Over the years Hadassah has raised millions of dollars toward enriching the programs at the three youth villages.  At Hadassah Neurim, there is a special needs program and a sports track for the athletically gifted students as well as other innovative opportunities such as animal therapy, car mechanics and carpentry.  At Meir Shfeyah, alongside the computer rooms, library, sports stadium, greenhouse, chicken farm, dairy and small model Ethiopian village, there is a winery, begun in 2005, which produces 5,000 bottles of premium wine annually and is run with the help of the 11th and 12th grade students.

We can help these students in our Youth Aliyah Villages by purchasing Youth Aliyah Certificates that are good for any occasion.
Small Certificates are $5 and up plus postage. Large Certificates are $15 and up plus postage. Contact Marlene Elkin 271-1871.

HADASSAH NEWS - CHILD RIDES TO HADASSAH OPERATING ROOM IN STYLE!

child-rides-to-hadassah-operating-room-page.jpg

What three-year-old child would want to be wheeled into the operating room on a hospital bed if instead he could arrive on his own set of wheels?

“Surgery isn't fun, but there's no reason the ride to the operating room can't be,” comments Dr. Rely Alon, Director of the Hadassah Medical Organization’s Division of Nursing and Health Professions.

Dan Synett is the first child to arrive at the operating room in Hadassah’s new ride-on car. This isn’t Dan’s first trip to Hadassah’s operating room. “Dan was born with a congenital defect in his urinary system that affects his kidneys and bladder,” explains Dr. Guy Hidas, Director of Pediatric Urology at Hadassah.  “In severe cases,” he says, “this defect leads to kidney failure and requires dialysis and a kidney transplant.”

Dan was born via emergency C-section at only 31 weeks gestation. His initial chances of living a healthy life were slim. When Dan was only a few weeks old, he underwent his first surgery. “This one, however, should be his last,” says Dr. Hidas.

“As first-time parents, we had no idea how low Dan’s chances of survival were,” relates Dan’s mother, Nadine Synett. “I am so grateful for everything Hadassah did to save him.”

Mrs. Synett adds, “Dan received excellent care at Hadassah. Riding to the operating room in a car like grandpa’s definitely made the whole experience even better.”

Watch Dan ride to the operating room!

EMAIL ISSUES CONTINUE!

Due to higher security issues with spam, large files, and mass emails, some email addresses are not receiving our Hadassah e-bulletins and e-blasts. Bulletins are sent around the first of each month, e-blasts prior to programs. If you are not receiving our Rochester Hadassah emails, please let us know. What started as just AOL issues may now happen with other servers. And unfortunately we do not always know who is not getting the emails. Please share this info with others (especially AOL users).  HADASSAH'S 360 DEGREES OF HEALING - THE FULL CIRCLE CAMPAIGN

360-campaign-with-HI-logo-cropped.jpg

Hadassah is the founder of Israel’s modern health-care system and has been tireless in maintaining the highest standards for more than 100 years. Since 1960, the population of Jerusalem has tripled, and the demands on the Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) and Hadassah Hospital at the Ein Kerem campus have grown exponentially. Hadassah must respond—and we must look forward. So HMO begins, first by completely reimagining the iconic Round Building, the hospital’s original inpatient center at Ein Kerem. With this renovation and expansion, the new Round Building will be an important healing center for Israel. It will significantly advance the services in its outpatient surgery, maternity, oncology, and dermatology departments.
Please support this newest campaign!!!  Contact Monika Katzel  for further information: 203-1200 or lesterkatzel@earthlink.net
