Dear
,
2018 Annual Schmoozathon
Mark your calendar for the
Hadassah Minneapolis Annual Schmoozathon, Wednesday, July 18 at the home of
Linda Tell, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. rain or shine!
Enjoy a fabulous pot luck lunch, tour of Linda’s home (right), commissioned and
built by Lloyd Wright (son of Frank Lloyd Wright), hang out by/in the pool if you wish, play
games! This is such a relaxing and fun
event, with the opportunity to schmooze with current and new friends.
Besides being a great social event, this is an opportunity to raise money for the 360° of Healing Hadassah Hospital Capital
Campaign. Bare-minimum expenses come out
of the $36, with the rest going towards the Campaign. The Craft Co-op will sell their amazing
items, and when you RSVP, feel free to make an extra donation whether you are coming or not. When
you indicate your potluck choice with your RSVP, a member of the Schmoozathon team
will be in touch with you to coordinate what you are bringing. Car-pooling is encouraged.
If you are interested in serving on the planning committee, please contact Barbara Parks, hadassahbawbie@yahoo.com
or 952-905-6891. This always is a popular event, enriched by being part of the organizing team. To download a flyer, click here.
Hadassah Medical Organization Nurse Visit and Dessert Reception
The Upper Midwest Region of Hadassah invites YOU to a dessert reception at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 7th at Adath Jeshurun Congregation, Minnetonka, featuring Mark Bloom performing Israeli and Jewish Music. The keynote speaker for this important evening is Gilat Yihye, who currently serves as Head Nurse of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. Ms. Yihye will inspire us with stories of the humanity, healing and the many life-saving medical breakthroughs that are being made and will be shared with medical establishments throughout the world. Hadassah Medical Organization takes great pride in the diversity of its Jewish, Arab, Muslim and Christian staff, medical personnel and patients. Hadassah’s Medical Centers are known throughout the world as "Islands of Peace."
Ms. Yihye previously worked as Head Nurse in the Diagnostic and Pre-Surgical Evaluation clinic, which she co-founded and where she implemented an innovative computer system. Among her other responsibilities at HMO were lung transplant coordinator, airborne escort from various countries, and lecturer in the Szold Nursing School. She has also been involved in several international health projects. She has a BS degree in Nursing from the Szold Nursing School and a Masters degree in Public Health and is a published author.
Ms. Yihye will share with us her wealth of experience at Hadassah Hospital. Join us to meet and be inspired by her! The event costs $18, free to undergraduate, graduate, nursing, and medical students. For more information, please contact Sarene Silver at ssilver125@aol.com or 763-544-4012. National News: Hadassah Statement on the US Embassy in Jerusalem
National Hadassah issued this statement May 14 regarding the move of the US Embassy to Jerusalem.
"Jerusalem has been the heart and soul of the Jewish People for 3000 years and the
heartbeat of Hadassah, The Women's Zionist Organization of America, Inc.
(HWZOA) since its founding in 1912. Rooted in the spirit of tikkun olam, healing the world, and harnessing the
power of American Women (and men) working to improve the quality of life of all
Israel's people, we celebrate Israel's 70th Year of Independence. The official
recognition of Jerusalem as the State of Israel's capital and the subsequent
Embassy move is the fulfillment of a longstanding bipartisan commitment to the
Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995. We know firsthand the importance of a strong
US-Israel relationship and we work to support and foster its growth each day.
"Every independent, sovereign nation has the right to designate its capital; Israel is no
exception. The United States was the first country to recognize Israel's
independence in 1948 and therefore it is most fitting that it is the first
country to recognize Jerusalem as the State of Israel's capital and move its
Embassy there as acknowledgement of Israel's seat of government. The fact
that this move took place on the anniversary of Israel's 70th Year of
Independence makes it especially poignant.
"Hadassah's position is simple — we stand for a strong US-Israel relationship and continue to advocate for peace, health and safeguards for Israel's future; the future of
all its inhabitants. Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish People and
we applaud the recognition by the United States of America of it also being the
capital of the State of Israel."
Book Chavurot
The Night Club Bookclub usually meets the first Thursday of every month, but for June we had to reschedule due to another Hadassah event. We have moved the Bookclub to the following Thursday, June 14 at the Plymouth Library, 15700 36th Avenue N., Plymouth, MN. We have our discussion in the Conference Room, which is the second room on the right side as you walk into the Library. We will discuss The Gilded Years by Karin Tanabe. We are always looking for new members. If you have any questions, contact Shelly Levine at shellyilevine@msn.com.
The June gathering of the Afternoon Book Group is at 12:30 p.m. on June 20 at the Plymouth Library: 15700 36th Avenue N., Plymouth. We will be in the small meeting room along the far-right wall. The book is The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. Please note that this is a change from the book on the original book list. We are collecting our annual Hadassah donation, designating the funds for Pediatric Research. Bring your checks to the next meeting or send them to Sue Garnett. Note that we had to change the July meeting because the Schmoozathon coincides with the July 18th date. We will move our meeting to July 25. Ronald McDonald House Is Looking for Your Help
Hadassah has been serving meals every Thursday at the Ronald
McDonald House on the University of Minnesota campus (east bank) for 30 some
years. We’ve had captains and teams preparing, warming and serving up to 100 people--patients
and their families, all this time quietly fulfilling a Hadassah mission of
helping to heal and support the sick here at “home.” We have lost several teams for various
reasons and need more teams so we are reaching out to you and asking you to
step up, pitch in, and have fun at the same time. Tasks include cooking on site or providing
cooked food that is purchased from a professional resource such as Costco,
Sam’s Club, Cub, etc., delivering the meal to the House and providing servers
to dish up, clean up, and smile with good cheer and well wishes to family,
staff, and most of all the patients undergoing treatment in nearby University
hospitals. Talk to one of our captains, Terry
Hallfin at 763-588-5597 or email her at terrybmn@visi.com
to find out how you can be a part of this worthwhile endeavor. Ronald is waiting to hear from you. Don’t think about it -- just give it a try!

Membership
Be one of the Women Who Do! Hadassah members are involved in tikkun olam in many
different ways. It goes without saying that we support the groundbreaking medical research being done in Israel. Several clinical trials are now being done jointly with researchers here in the United States. In addition, Hadassah members are involved in and advocate
for important issues ranging from international to domestic. It isn’t all serious, either. We make new friends and have fun together while we connect with our Jewish community.
How can we help you find your place in Hadassah? What are you interested in?
