Minneapolis Hadassah Invites you to Travel back in Time

Susan Weinberg Book

Our May speaker will be Susan Weinberg, author of We Spoke Jewish: A Legacy of Stories. Susan is an artist, writer, and genealogist. Her talk entitled, “It’s All About Story,” will share stories from her book about the three waves of Jewish immigration in the 20th century. For her book she interviewed residents of the Sholom East and West campuses. Susan will be selling her books at this event, and $5 from each book will be donated to Hadassah.  Join us on Thursday, May 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the Knollwood Place Apartments auditorium.  We especially would like to encourage our Hadassah book groups to attend this event. Questions or if you would like to help with refreshments, contact Sue Garnett — 952-545-1435 or at nettgar1@gmail.com.  To download a copy of the flyer, click here.

We are trying online registration for the first time.  To register online, click here.  You also can wait for your flyer to arrive and then mail that in as usual.

We're Streamlining our Fundraising!

Donating to Hadassah Minneapolis is becoming easier than ever!  Instead of a Spring and Fall solicitation, we're combining them into ONE solicitation!  Expect just ONE letter in 2018, before Rosh Hashanah.  We hope you'll give generously.  You still may receive various fundraising letters from National Hadassah.  This is a win-win for everyone!  Not only will Hadassah Minneapolis cut down on printing and mailing costs for two campaigns, but it will be easier than ever for you to keep track of your donation (since there's only one campaign) and -- perhaps -- give a little more!

National Hadassah is beginning a new campaign, "360 Degrees of Healing."  This three-year capital campaign will provide money to renovate and improve Hadassah Hospital's original "Round Building."  They'll be able to add 200 new beds, renovate 17 operating rooms, provide more comprehensive services, and much more.  YOU DON'T NEED TO WAIT TO DONATE!  Commit to Hadassah with a generous donation at any time.  For more information, contact fundraising vice presidents Stacey Bush (staceyrbush@gmail.com) or Linda Ward (ward4858@yahoo.com).

Ronald McDonald House Is Looking for Your Help

Hadassah has been serving meals every Thursday at the Ronald McDonald House on the University of Minnesota campus (east bank) for 30 some years. We’ve had captains and teams preparing, warming and serving up to 100 people--patients and their families, all this time quietly fulfilling a Hadassah mission of helping to heal and support the sick here at “home.”  We have lost several teams for various reasons and need more teams so we are reaching out to you and asking you to step up, pitch in, and have fun at the same time.  Tasks include cooking on site or providing cooked food that is purchased from a professional resource such as Costco, Sam’s Club, Cub, etc., delivering the meal to the House and providing servers to dish up, clean up, and smile with good cheer and well wishes to family, staff, and most of all the patients undergoing treatment in nearby University hospitals.  Talk to one of our captains, Terry Hallfin at 763-588-5597 or email her at terrybmn@visi.com to find out how you can be a part of this worthwhile endeavor.  Ronald is waiting to hear from you.  Don’t think about it -- just give it a try!

Craft Co-Op

We have been busy sewing, knitting, crocheting!!  You name it, we've done it!  Our latest additions of gorgeous needlepoint pillows and framed pictures with Asian inspired canvases are truly beautiful to behold.  Donated by one of our loyal members whose needlework is outstanding, they would be welcome additions to your décor.  We have new aprons for adults and children featuring bagels and cookies, wild flowers, and alphabets.  There is something for everyone you love.  We'll be showing our wares again in late April, but you can always call Debby Wolk, 612-925-7932, or Sara Bernstein, 612-825-2568, for a private showing.

Membership Update

Our State of Israel has many reasons to celebrate this year.  It is the 70th anniversary of our State as well as the 100th anniversary of the Hadassah School of Nursing in Israel.  Henrietta Szold, the founder of Hadassah in 1912, realized an urgent need for better medical training as the population expanded in Israel.  In 1918, she went on to establish the first School of Nursing in Jerusalem.  In 2016, Hadassah started a Doctoral Program for nurses, so they could research, submit a thesis, and receive their Ph.D.  Today about 13% of nurses in Israel are male.  Politics is not an issue:  there are both Jewish and Arab nurses in the Hadassah hospital.  About 50% of the undergraduate nursing students are Arab.  One of the meaningful factors in Israel's economic stability is the outstanding healthcare system in Israel, which was founded 30 years before Israel was formed.  For over 100 years, Hadassah has been involved in Tikkun Olam, repairing the world.  We can be proud that we belong to an organization that works to make the world a better place.  If you are interested in becoming more involved with Hadassah or know of anyone who might be interested in becoming a member to help with Hadassah's important work, please contact Terry Hallfin at terrybmn@visi.com. or 763-588-5597 or Rosa Liberty at librp68@gmail.com.

Walking Group

The walking group always is happy to welcome new members.  The group structure is fluid.  We hope you can commit to walking with us on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, but we understand that life gets in the way.  Just come when you can -- be sure that we will gladly add you to our chavurah!  We meet at 10:30 and walk until 11:30.  Until the weather warms up, we meet at Ridgedale.  When spring finally arrives, we will walk various paths around our City of Lakes.  For more information about the walking group, contact Terry Hallfin at terrybmn@visi.com.
