PRESIDIUM MESSAGE AND ANNUAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE

medp.jpg

At Purim, Hadassah members are reminded about Henrietta Szold's visit to the Middle East in 1910. The deplorable living conditions she witnessed in the Ottoman Empire controlled Palestine compelled her to organize her women's study group back home to act. She was driven by her faith and values to start an initiative that would promote the well being of Palestine and foster Jewish values among the participants.

Fast forward to 2018. Americans again witnessed the horrors of gun violence, this time in a Florida high school. Nightly our news stations bombard us with pictures of war torn areas, of citizens and politicians engaged in uncivil discourse. We experience a police presence in our museums, national parks, airports, schools, places of worship and more areas once deemed safe prior to 9/11. Daily we face a different world. We're exposed to violence in movies, video games and on TV. Guns are plentiful and easily accessible. Hadassah has long advocated against all violence. We stand and fight for women's health, justice, economic equity and security; for civil and human rights for the LGBTQ community, immigrants and refugees. We take a stand and speak out against family abuse, human trafficking and gun violence.

As a nation, we bear collective responsibility for the violence in our nation – violence in words and deeds. As a caring, human service organization of strong, articulate and principled women, we MUST organize, speak out and act to protect the values of our country and its inhabitants. Please log on to advocacy@Hadassah.org and learn about Hadassah's opportunities to act. Our founder Henrietta Szold was deeply committed to advocacy and the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam. She's in our heads and hearts as we work and advocate together to build a more just and better world for all of us – especially for the children.

UPDATE - MITZVAH PROJECT AT SCHOOL #3

On February 6th, 11 Hadassah volunteers visited Nicole Berntsen's class at School 3 to provide a fun morning for her delightful 3rd graders. Linda Rapkin started with a lesson of cinquain, - a 5 stanza writing project the students had to create. Divided into groups, the kids then made fleece scarves, they decorated mini soaps to give as gifts and red plastic containers filled with animal crackers to take home as cookie jars. Adorable valentines were made for friends and family. Each student had a chance to decorate and eat valentine cookies. Marilyn Rosen finished the morning with an amazing story telling session. Gloves and hand knit hats were left for the kids, to go along with the scarves they so proudly made and wore in class. Each received a Hadassah valentine and a goody bag. The Hadassah volunteers were rewarded with big smiles, cheers of thank you and hugs all around. Our school visits are always appreciated, as are our donated school supplies and reading books. Supplies and books are accepted all year. These donations assure that these beautiful youngsters have the necessary tools for classroom learning.

A BIG thank you goes to our wonderful Mitzvah Makers, who gave their time, donated cookies and decorating supplies, hats and gloves and the supplies for our class projects: Linda Rapkin, Dorothy Appel, Karen Newman, Wendy Scull, Emily Fishman, Martha Green, Carol Shulman, Marilyn Rosen, Judi Flanders, Monika Katzel.

YOUTH ALIYAH/CHILDREN AT RISK

Youth Aliyah Programs

Hadassah Neurim, near Netyana, was founded in 1948 as a refuge for children fleeing the gunfire of the war of Independence. Today it continues as a sanctuary for youth from around the world and from the streets of Israel. Hundreds of adolescents, the majority of whom are from the former Soviet
Union, call Neurim home.
The village programs include sound and audio workshops, animal therapy, pre-army preparation, and carpentry. Hadassah Neurim also offers programs for special needs students and athleticly gifted youth.  It's not just about the game.  The sports program at Neurim provides at risk youth
a nurturing social and educational framework through which they learn teamwork and discipline.  These lessons prepare them for life outside the
village, as full and productive members of Israeli society.

We can help the students and the many others in the Youth Villages by purchasing Youth Aliyah Certificates which are good for any occasion. Small Certificates are $5 and up plus postage.  Large Certificates are $15 and up plus postage. Contact Marlene Elkin, 271-1871.

THE HADASSAH/JCC SHED

Remember the JCC/Hadassah Shed is in the back of the JCC parking lot.  Hadassah and the JCC get paid by the pound for textile donations, which are then directed to those in need in the US and around the world.  Please - only clothing, shoes, purses, linens, towels in tied plastic bags.  No household items (non-textile), toys, pillows.

Thank you for your help and donations.

Passover begins at the end of March and many people begin preparing food early to freeze so when the holiday arrives they don't have to cook so much. Our cookbook has a wonderful section of Passover recipes as well as recipes for other occasions.  It is a great gift to give to anyone. The price is $18 and $22 to ship.  Contact Marlene Elkin 271-1871.

EMAIL ISSUES CONTINUE!

Due to higher security issues with spam, large files, and mass emails, some email addresses are not receiving our Hadassah e-bulletins and e-blasts. Bulletins are sent around the first of each month, e-blasts prior to programs. If you are not receiving our Rochester Hadassah emails, please let us know. What started as just AOL issues may now happen with other servers. And unfortunately we do not always know who is not getting the emails. Please share this info with others (especially AOL users). Write to: rochester@hadassah.org

 ADVOCACY AND PARKLAND

All too often tragedy strikes a little too close to home for many of us. I know I speak for all of you — Hadassah’s members and supporters — when I say that our hearts go out to all those directly and indirectly affected by the tragic loss of life at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. We pray for those injured, physically and emotionally, and for Hadassah VP Merna Shapiro and her family who live in Parkland, FL and are thankfully safe. Merna’s grandchildren, who were in lockdown at the school next door, came out shaken but ok.

It will be a very long time before this small town awakens from this nightmare. We long for the day when the slaughter of innocent lives is only a lesson in a history book, but we cannot just sit back and remain quiet over the 18 school shootings, that have occurred since January. We must speak out.

HADASSAH recently observed the yahrzeit of our founder, Henrietta Szold z”l. She was always deeply committed to advocacy as are we, which is why we frequent the halls of Congress and meet with legislators regularly to protect the values this organization was founded upon.

The value of all human lives is central to our mission as a women’s Zionist organization. Keep our children safe and support Hadassah’s efforts to legislate for stronger gun control legislation. Get involved in contacting congressional legislators both by writing and in person—join your local chapter for a Day in the District because every voice counts.

For more information about Hadassah’s advocacy opportunities, please email advocacy@hadassah.org. We are the power of women who advocate and together we will strengthen one another and build a better world for all.

With sadness and hope for the future,

Ellen Hershkin (signature)

National President
