ANNUAL  P.A.D. PROJECT PARTY WITH TEMPLE SINAI'S WOMEN'S CHAVURAH

Temple Sinai's Women's Chavurah & Hadassah Rochester Join Together for their
Annual
P.A.D. Project  Party
Wednesday, January 17, 2018, 7:00 PM
Temple Sinai, 363 Penfield Rd.

PAD PARTY2.jpg
2017 P.A.D. Party

Government programs like SNAP or food stamps don't provide for feminine hygiene products. Many underserved women and girls regularly miss work and school during their menstrual cycle. They can't afford tampons and pads. In response to this need, the National Council of Jewish Women's local section developed the P.A.D. project, which stands for Providing Access and Dignity to women and girls during their monthly cycle.

On January 17th, we'll assemble personal hygiene kits for women and girls in shelters, refugee centers, city schools, the Center for Youth Services and other organizations.

How can you help? Come to Temple Sinai with your donations of personal hygiene products (packages of individually wrapped pads, panty liners and tampons.) Your generous gifts make this project work.

Can't come? Bring your donations to Sinai anytime. Donation bins are at each entrance. Or to Monika Katzel, 68 Water Works Dr., East Rochester, or to Hadassah meetings/programs.

What a wonderful, practical and caring way to help the women in our community!

RSVP by January 15 to Carol Yunker at VPKelly@aol.com or 385-3910 Questions? Contact Monika Katzel at lesterkatzel@earthlink.net or 203-1200

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN - ILLUMINATE YOUR SOUL!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDIUM

medp.jpg

While the cold, snow and ice of Rochester winters might tempt us to stay indoors, hunkered down in the warm shelters of our homes, the work and activities of Hadassah are ongoing and beg us to come out, attend and support. Our work in Hadassah's hospitals, schools and villages is non-stop and the need for your financial support is constant.

Please respond as generously as you can to our Annual Campaign mailing sent to your homes before Chanukah. Your dollars support research to find cures, Youth Aliyah Villages for Youth at Risk, and scholarships for Young Judaea – and provide for the state-of-the-art medical care for all in the Middle East.

Hadassah is a Miracle Maker. Warm your heart and the hearts of those served by Hadassah by contributing to our local campaign. See your mailing or send your donation directly to our Treasurer, Toby Berke, 119 Daley Blvd., Rochester, NY 14617.

We applaud and gratefully acknowledge our members whose recent donations will help Hadassah CHANGE THE WORLD through the Power of Medicine, Research and Service to Humanity (see separate ANNUAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE below).

YOUTH ALIYAH/CHILDREN AT RISK

Youth Aliyah Programs

Children come to the Youth Aliyah Villages from many backgrounds but with virtually no knowledge or understanding of their Jewish heritage.
We are proud to offer a variety of programs that enrich their lives with the history and variety of Jewish life. Programs such as the
Joy of Judaism and our Mission to Poland and Ethiopia help to achieve this goal. Our programs also focus on Didactic  Pyschological Testing to
access areas of learning that may need special attention.
Our cultural enrichment programs involving music performance and art make for a well rounded student. At Youth Aliyah our sports programs provide the structure, dicipline and team work that help students to develop lifelong habits and much needed self
esteem.

We can help the students and the many others in the Youth Villages by purchasing Youth Aliyah Certificates which are good for any occasion. Small Certificates are $5 and up plus postage.  Large Certificates are $15 and up plus postage. Contact Marlene Elkin, 271-1871.

 YOUR IMPACT IN 2017!

IMPACT.jpg

There is no organization like Hadassah — working in communities around the US to connect Jewish women and empower them to effect change through support of Israel, advancing health and wellness, and advocacy. It's because of you that Hadassah accomplished so much in 2017. Here are just a few highlights:

  • Your Generosity We completed the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower campaign*, helping us better serve our patients with top-tier technologies, cutting-edge research and compassionate care, including 13 new state-of-the-art underground operating rooms.
  • Medical Milestones HMO teams performed the world's first-of-its-kind dual robotic surgery, launched Israel's first Pediatric Palliative Care Center and first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. They made headlines for outstanding innovations, including identifying the genetic mutation causing a devastating pediatric neurological disease, and winning the American Academy of Ophthalmology's annual prize for the prevention of blindness around the world. In addition, the first woman was appointed to serve as dean of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Faculty of Medicine.
  • Global Disaster Response Dr. Esti Galili-Weisstub, Founder and Director of Hadassah's Jerusalem Crisis Intervention Center, helped the Mexican government create a strategic plan for responding to the long-term psychological impact of September's devastating earthquake.
  • Health & Wellness More than 165 events in the US engaged and educated 20,000 attendees about heart disease, nutrition, breast cancer, melanoma, multiple sclerosis and other illnesses.
  • Women's Health Equity At the United Nation's Commission on the Status of Women, Prof. Yoram Weiss, Medical Director of Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem, reported on Hadassah's Linda Joy Pollin Cardiovascular Wellness Center for Women's efforts "on behalf of women's health and gender equity in health care." In the US, the Coalition for Women's Health Equity, founded by Hadassah in 2016, grew to 28 member organizations working together to advance women's health equity legislation.
  • Civil Dialogue Our "Defining Zionism in the 21st Century" program featured 17 diverse speakers who discussed feminism and Zionism, intersectionality, interfaith initiatives, reaching millennials, and more. Hadassah leaders are also now teaching classes on Jewish Values & the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict in 16 communities, using the Shalom Hartman Institute's iEngage syllabus.
  • Youth Ties to Israel We helped 395 youngsters attend Young Judaea programs in the US and Israel, through $497,364 raised for scholarships.
  • At-Risk Youth Three Youth Aliyah 12th-graders took 2nd place in Israel's National Cyber Competition, sponsored by the Ministry of Education, and one student represented Israel at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists for her work on the immune system and Alzheimer's. A new student learning center, the Nancy Falchuk Enrichment Center, opened at Youth Aliyah's Meir Shfeyah Village, home to the newly dedicated Marcie Natan Dining Hall.
  • Advocacy in Action We sent more than 33,000 messages to elected officials on women's health, women's economic equity, combating violence against women, immigrant rights and against hate, racism, and white supremacy.
  • Outstanding Journalism Hadassah Magazine won seven Simon Rockower Awards from the American Jewish Press Association.

We believe — and we're sure you do too — that each individual has a moral imperative to help make our world a better place. We are so grateful to you for choosing to make a positive impact through Hadassah.
