Book Chavurot

The Night Club Bookclub meets at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. Our next gathering will be January 4, 2018 in the Plymouth Library, 15700 36th Avenue North. We will be in the small meeting room along the far right wall. The book we will be discussing is The Group by Mary McCarthy.

In 1933, eight young female friends graduate from Vassar College. The book describes these women’s lives post-graduation, beginning with the marriage of one of the friends, Kay Strong, and ending with her funeral in 1940. Each character struggles with different issues, including sexism in the work place, child rearing, financial difficulties, family crises and sexual relationships. Nearly all the women’s issues involve the men in their lives: fathers, employers, lovers or husbands. As highly educated women from affluent backgrounds, they must strive for autonomy and independence in a time when a woman’s role is still largely restricted to marriage and childbirth. The plot is influenced by the political and economic atmosphere of the time. Over the course of the book, the reader learns about the women’s views on contraception, love, sex. Socialism and psychoanalysis.

We are always open to new members. Therefore, don’t hesitate to bring along friends and family members who would love to join book group. It is always an enjoyable evening. Any questions please contact Shelly Levine 612-597-3349.

The next gathering of the Afternoon Book Group is at 12:30 p.m. on January 17 at the Plymouth Library 15700 36th Avenue North. We will be in the small meeting room along the far right wall. The book for January is  The Muralist: A Novel by Barbara Shapiro. "When Alizée Benoit, a young American painter working for the Works Progress Administration (WPA), vanishes in New York City in 1940, no one knows what happened to her. Not her Jewish family living in German-occupied France. Not her arts patron and political compatriot, Eleanor Roosevelt. Not her close-knit group of friends and fellow WPA painters, including Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Lee Krasner. And, some seventy years later, not her great-niece, Danielle Abrams, who, while working at Christie's auction house, uncovers enigmatic paintings hidden behind works by those now famous Abstract Expressionist artists. Do they hold answers to the questions surrounding her missing aunt?”

We welcome new members Questions? Contact Sue Garnett, 952-545-1435 or nettgar1@gmail.com.

The Henrietta Szold afternoon book group is a wonderful group of women (and a few men) many of whom live at Knollwood Place though some of us come from Minneapolis as well as Plymouth, Golden Valley, etc, --   so all are welcome.  We meet the 4th Wednesday of every month at Knollwood Place in the board room at 2:00 p.m.  Many of our participants get their copies of the book through the volunteer delivery system of our wonderful Hennepin County library.    If you would like information on how to get books delivered directly to you call the library at Home Services: Outreach Department at: 612-543-8850.  All of the books on our list have many copies available in the library system as well as copies in large print, audio and download  availability so you should all be able to get copies.  Ask for the title well in advance so you are sure to have a chance to read part or all of the book before our meeting.  However we do a summary of the book for those who may not have had time to complete the book so all can participate in discussing the major themes of the book.  Please join us.

Questions:  call Debby Wolk at 612-925-7932 or email at: debhadassah@gmail.com.

January 24 - A Man called Ove by Fredrik Backman. Ove is a curmudgeon with staunch principles, strict routine and a short fuse. He is bitter and sad. When a chatty couple with two daughters move in next door a comical and heart-warming tale ensues.

Hadassah Continues to Make Miracles

Thank you to all of you who donated to the Fall Campaign.  We have surpassed last year’s total, and even though we are into a new year, donations continue to arrive.  It is never too late to contribute to the incredible work being done by at Hadassah Hospital.  Send your donations to Nancy Peilte, 8301 Chowen Ave. S, Bloomington, MN 55431, or go online to hadassah.org.

The miracles never stop happening.  Here is another example.

Simcha and his twin sister, Sarah, were born to a Jerusalem couple in their early forties after years of hoping for children. They named the infant boy Simcha, the Hebrew word for happiness, to show their joy, even though they knew he would have a challenging beginning. Simcha needed heart surgery to correct a serious congenital defect.

When the surgeons at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem operated on Simcha, they discovered a serious lung problem as well. The only thing that could keep the baby alive while the additional surgery was performed was an ECMO machine, which provides heart-lung bypass support by taking blood from the body, oxygenating it using an artificial lung, and then pumping it back into the body using an artificial heart. (ECMO stands for “extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.”)

An ECMO machine costs $50,000 dollars and requires a large investment in training and personnel. Fortunately, Hadassah Hospital had both an ECMO and highly trained staff!

Simcha is now home with his twin sister, Sarah, and his parents. Their mom comments, “The surgical staff and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit that saved our little boy are made up of human angels. Imagine our joy lighting Hanukkah candles this year. You have given us this miracle. We can never thank you enough."

Exciting Play Coming to the Sabes JCC

The next cultural clique outing will be the play “A Pickle” based on an event in the life of Doris Rubenstein. It will be performed on Monday, January 22nd at 7:30 p.m,. We recommend you purchase tickets now. Contact Sarene Silver sarenesilver@comcast.net with any questions.

Special Guest Appearance

Discussion of this play will be on Saturday, January 27 at 2:00 p.m. at the home of Sarene Silver, 2435 Manchester Drive, Golden Valley 55422. RSVP 763-544-4012. Our special  guest will be Doris Rubenstein.

We will be showing our wonderful inventory which also includes reversible aprons, adult and children’s sizes, our now famous “I’ve been promoted to Grandma” towels as well as other hospitality gifts at our January 7th Installation brunch and at the February 11 Maj-a-Thon. So come a little early and stay a little later to shop.  Cash, check or credit card purchases make it easy with all proceeds going directly to support our HMO projects.  We also take special orders. Membership Update

Ronald McDonald HouseWe all know someone with Alzheimer's, diabetes, macular degeneration, ALS, MS, heart disease or Parkinson’s.  As members of Hadassah, we can be proud that we support all the amazing cutting-edge research and treatment of these and other diseases done by Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO).

HMO scientists working with stem cell research have halted the deterioration of the retina in laboratory models; using patients’ own stem cells, they have inhibited the progression of ALS in human clinical trials.

Treatments or cures for diseases like age-related macular degeneration, ALS, MS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes could be a reality in the foreseeable future.

Hadassah Medical Organization is leading the way in recognizing unique signs and symptoms of heart disease in women.

Hadassah researchers developed an oral insulin pill that could revolutionize diabetes treatment and is testing a drug to treat non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. FDA-approved clinical trials are now underway in over 20 medical centers in the US, Israel and Australia.

If you are interested in becoming more involved with Hadassah or know of anyone that might be interested in becoming a member to help with Hadassah’s important work, please contact Terry Hallfin at terrybmn@visi.com or 763-588-5597or Rosa Liberty at librp68@gmail.com.
