Dear
,
GEM: Save
the Date! Hadassah Minneapolis and St. Paul present – Gender Equity in
Medicine, Featuring Dr. Virginia Miller, MBA, PhD, Professor, Surgery
and Physiology, Director, Women’s Health Research Center, Mayo Clinic,
Rochester, MN and a leader in this field.
Plan
to attend on Sunday, October 15, 10 a.m. at Beth El Synagogue in St.
Louis Park to learn about this issue, which is critical to our health,
and to hear what we can do to make important changes. $10.00 per
person in advance and $15.00 at the door.
Why is Gender Equity in Medicine important to you and to all people? * Importance of
inclusion of female subjects in medical research
* Why women and men may have
different symptoms for the same
illnesses
* Drugs may vary as to how they affect
women vs men
* Questions to ask your doctor
A
multitude of diseases are often misdiagnosed or overlooked entirely in
women because medical research, diagnostic tools and treatments are
frequently based on male physiology. Even animal and cellular research
subjects are overwhelmingly more male than female.
Hadassah
is a leader in research, care and advocacy for Gender Equity in
Medicine. The invitation for the event was sent last month.
We
encourage you to bring significant others—they don’t need to be Hadassah
members to attend. Registrations are due by October 6th.

Book Chavurot
The Night Club Bookclub meets at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at the Plymouth Library. However, this month our next gathering is on October 10th at Lunds and Byerlys
Plymouth, in the second-floor meeting room, 3455 Vicksburg Lane North instead of October 5, which is the
Jewish holiday of Sukkot. The Night Club Book Group will be in the meeting room on the second floor at Lunds. The book we will be discussing is Salt to he Sea by Ruta Sepetys. It's winter in 1945. Refugees from Poland, East Prussia, Germany, and
Lithuania merge, seeking passage on the Wilhelm Gustoff, a ship leaving
the war zone. Sepetys’ tale of hope and affirmation brings us into a
little-known episode near WWII’s end. Voted the top Goodreads juvenile
literature book of 2016. We are always open to new members. Contact Shelly Levine if you are interested in joining - shellyilevine@msn.com.
The Afternoon Book Group will get together on October 18, 12:30 p.m., in the Plymouth Library on Vicksburg Lane. We'll quickly discuss of A Fall of Marigolds by Susan Meissner, a 2014 book due its 10 minutes in the sun after 2 delays by our group. Then we'll discuss Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys. (See the description in the Night Book Club article above.)
We'll end the year with Secrets of a Charmed Life by Susan Meissner [2015] on Nov. 15, and share our favorite recent reads on December 20th.
We have decided to support Hadassah's stem cell research this year, and have been collecting our members' donations.
We remain open to visitors and new members. Join us anytime and meet the group.
The Szold Knollwood Book Group meets every month for a lively discussion of a
variety of book titles. We meet the
fourth Wednesday of most months at Knollwood Place Apartments, 3630 Phillips Pkwy.,
St. Louis Park, in the board room
at 1:00 p.m. I say most months depending
on our holiday calendar dates. The
following titles have been chosen for the remainder of the year. An additional list will be presented as we
near 2018 so that everyone has time to get the books from our wonderful public
library system. All of the titles listed have large print, e-books and audio books
available. To reserve a book or arrange for delivery directly to you call
612-543-8850. Be sure to do so in plenty
of time to read all or some of the book.
It makes for interesting discussions when we all can participate. However, that said, everyone is welcome just
to sit in and hear the story.
October 25th- Britt-Marie was Here: a Novel by Frederick Backman November 22nd- Hillbilly Elegy: a Memoir of a Family &
Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance December 27th-

Membership Update
The strength of Hadassah is our membership. Without our membership, we would be unable to
accomplish all that we do to advocate for women’s issues in the U.S. and around
the world, support medical research, build a stronger Jewish community, and support
Israel.
On October 15th, the Minneapolis and St. Paul
Chapters are excited to host a program about Gender Equity in
Medicine. The speaker is Virginia M.
Miller, MBA, PhD who has been working in this area for over thirty years. This would be a perfect opportunity to bring
a friend who is not a member or a member who is not active.

Craft Co-op Fall News
While it is true that most of us worker bees don’t do much knitting or crocheting in the warm summer months, there are a few of us who never want to stop creating new things for our Hadassah women. We will be selling our winter themed items at our October 15th meeting at Beth El Synagogue so bring cash, checks or credit card and stock up for hospitality , birthday, and Hanukah gifts while helping us support our wonderful Hadassah hospital. We won’t forget the aprons, pot holders or embroidered guest towels or the darling hand-made toys either. We have so much good stuff!
Walking Group
Many of us have been complaining about memory loss—not anything serious but annoying just the same. Walking can help.
Researchers following up on 300 older adults after 13 years found that those who had walked six to nine miles a week lowered their risk of memory problems by 50 percent.*
If you want to work on improving your memory, walk with us each Tuesday and Thursday morning from 10:30 to 11:30. That’s close to three miles each day. Three plus three equals six. So we are right on target!! When the weather is nice, we walk outside at various sites around our beautiful city. Bad weather brings us inside so we never have to miss a day of walking with wonderful friends to improve our memory.

Fall Fundraising
The High Holidays usher in a time to reflect upon the year
that has passed. At this time, we want to thank you fro your past and continued
support of Hadassah. As we delve into the fall fundraising campaign, let us take
a moment to savor two of the many sweet successes at the Hadassah Hospital from
this year:
Gaza Boy Walks for the First Time. Unable to stand on
his feet and suffering from sever respiratory distress, a four year old boy from
Gaza was able to walk once Hadassah Hospital surgeons identified and removed a
large tumor lodged in his chest and also treated his acute respiratory
distress.
An Australian biopharmaceutical company has received
approval from the Hadassah Medical Organization’s ethic committee and Israel’s
Ministry of Health to begin its first human clinical trial with a new drug to
fight a bacterial infection called CDI.
You made all this possible. Again, thank you for giving so
generously to Hadassah in the past, and we hope that when you receive your fall
campaign letter you will once again make another generous contribution.
