By the time you read this, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur will have
passed and Sukkot is just around the corner. The holidays are a time of
retrospective thoughts as well as thoughts towards the future. We,
your presidium of Hadassah- Rochester, have been busy looking back at
this past year as well as looking forward towards our future. We’ve
been looking at what programming has worked for our chapter and thinking
of new and innovative ideas for 2018.
With that in mind, we
would like to hear from you, our members, as to what kinds of programs
you would like us to have. Are you interested in Israel, Women’s Health
Issues, Advocacy, Hadassah projects, or something else entirely? We
have put together a survey for you to fill out so that we can see where
your interests lie. The survey is part of this e-bulletin. Please
print it, fill it out, and bring it with you to one of the October programs. You may also scan it and send it to one of us via email. If you are interested in
working on a program, please let us know that too. We always need YOU,
our members, to make our programming possible.
From our families to yours, we wish you a happy, healthy year, filled with joy, laughter, love and peace.

SPEAK OUT FOR IMMIGRANTS!
As Jews, we have a special understanding of the immigrant experience.
Hadassah proudly advocates for refugees seeking safe haven and stands
with the long list of elected officials and community leaders supporting
the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Urge
Congress to protect DACA participants and the DACA program, and join us
in advocating for comprehensive bipartisan immigration reform.

Shaul Elbaz, director of youth villages boarding school, opens
"graduates house" to provide warm home for village's graduates
after enlisting in the military
For dozens of lone soldiers, the Meir Shfeyah Youth Village
is home . The soldiers who have completed their studies in the village,
return there during their time off from the army to the "graduates house" where they are treated like part of one big family.
Many of the students of the youth village are from the
former Soviet Union; they immigrated to Israel without their families and many of them do not have a home to go back to. As long as they
are students at the village, they have a place to stay during their
weekends. But after their enlistment in the military, they are left
without a place to spend their time off.
The " graduates house" was opened specifically for this
purpose. There, the soldiers have bedrooms, get warm meals, a refrigerator
full of snacks, a washing machine, dryer, television and other services meant to make their stay in the house more pleasant, and give them a sense of home.
Students and many graduates view Shaul Elbaz as a father
figure. Some of them find in him a shoulder to lean on during a time of
crisis and further, he helps raise donations to enable them to go to a university.
We can help the students and the many others in the Youth
Villages by purchasing Youth Aliyah Certificates which are good for any
occasion. Small Certificates are $5 and up plus postage. Large Certificates are $15 and up plus postage. Contact Marlene Elkin, 271-1871.
THE
HADASSAH/JCC SHED
Remember the JCC/Hadassah Shed is in the back of the JCC parking lot. Hadassah and the JCC get paid by the pound for textile donations, which are then directed to those in need in the US and around the world. Please - only clothing, shoes, purses, linens, towels in tied plastic bags. No household items (non-textile), toys, pillows.
Thank you for
your help and donations.
