JANET WAGNER MEMORIAL FOOTBALL CHALLENGE
RESPONDING TO HURRICANE HARVEY
Hadassah
wants to do its part to alleviate Hurricane Harvey's devastation by
directing you to the organizations listed below that have effective
disaster response mechanisms in place to help families of all faiths in
Texas:
Although the Hadassah year begins in
January, many of us know September is the beginning of the year for many
things. Children, grandchildren and the teachers among us go back to
school. Rosh Hashanah, commencing at sundown Wednesday, the 20th, will
signal the beginning of the Jewish year 5778. Fall will quickly be upon
us, new programming will jump-start, and Hadassah Rochester will begin
to plan for 2018 and beyond.
While the idea of a State
of Israel may be said to go back to Kings David and Solomon, the modern
Zionist movement was propelled by the dreams of Theodor Herzl. The
inaugural congress of the Zionist Organization (ZO) was held from August
29-31, 1897 in Basel, Switzerland. It was attended by 200 delegates
from 16 countries, with 10 non-Jews in attendance (who did not vote) and
17 women, some in their own capacity and others accompanying delegates.
While women participated in this First Zionist Congress, they did not
have voting rights until the Second Zionist Congress the following year.
Today, the Zionist Organization’s successor, the World Zionist
Organization, includes Hadassah, as well as WIZO, B’nai B’rith, and
other organizations that define themselves as Zionist. Theodor Herzl
wrote in his diary (September 3, 1897):
"...Were I to sum up the
Basel Congress in a word - which I shall guard against pronouncing
publicly - it would be this: At Basel I founded the Jewish State. If I
said this out loud today l would be greeted by universal laughter. In
five years perhaps, and certainly in fifty years, everyone will perceive
it..."
Indeed, Herzl’s 50 year estimate was pretty much on the
money! Today, 120 years forward, Israel is a thriving and vibrant
country, a leader in so many areas, including technology, education, and
medicine.
When Hadassah women talk about new beginnings, they
may be thinking about the youngsters who just graduated from Meir
Shfeyah, the Hadassah Youth Aliyah Village near Zichron Yaakov’s wine
country. These disadvantaged youngsters might have had no future in the
modern Israeli state, but, Youth Aliyah turned that around. One young
man, an outstanding drummer and soundman, has been offered a prestigious
position in the army band. Sasha will attend the Rimon School of Music.
Hila, whose mother is an addict, learned to nurture and care for her
much younger sister. Now, the recipient of the Rafi Weitzman special
award for excellence, Hila is headed to the nursing school founded 99
years ago by Henrietta Szold. Meir Shfeya will soon be 95 years young,
but for its students, each year is a fresh beginning.
Our
August event, Wines and Songs of Summer, raised over $1200 for Youth
Aliyah, helping the young people like Sasha and Hila. Thank you to the
team – Lori Karbel, Nancy Haney, Alex Newman, Lisa Kramer, and Linda
Bartlett. You did an amazing job. This NEW event was a huge success!
As
Rosh Hashanah approaches, I love to remember the honey cake my
grandparents would bake… and think of it each year as I bake the same
recipe… often in the pan used by my Grandma and Poppy. I hope you too
have fond memories of the holidays… past and present!
Fran,
Tammi, Monika, and myself, along with our families, wish you and your
families a happy, healthy and sweet New Year 5778. May you be inscribed
and sealed in the Book of Life.
B’Shalom,
Marcia

GLAD AND SAD
We would love to acknowledge the GLAD... new babies (children, grandchildren) milestone anniversaries and birthdays, GET WELLS (if you want it known) along with the SAD events in future bulletins. If you have something to share, please send to one of the presidents. If you would like it known but not printed in the bulletin, feel free to share that with us as well.
It's back to school for our area students, ready to work and
learn. Unfortunately, many will come lacking the tools necessary for
classroom participation. WE CAN HELP – by buying school supplies for
the kids at Rochester School #3. Children are in need of paper, folders, notebooks, pencils, markers,
backpacks and art supplies (new please). New or gently used pleasure
reading books are always appreciated for any grade level.
Bring
your donations to Hadassah meetings, to me, or call for a pickup. Many
Rochester city teachers spend hundreds of their own money each year to
make sure their students have necessary supplies. The students and
faculty are so grateful for all your gifts, that allow the kids to be
prepared for this school year.

ADVOCACY UPDATE- YOUR VOICES ARE BEING HEARD!
Thank you, Hadassah Charlotte! During one of several
successful Day in the District meetings this August, our members came
together with Senator Thom Tillis (NC) to advance Hadassah’s
legislative agenda, focusing on combating anti-Semitism. Following the
meeting, Senator Tillis’s office tweeted opposition to white supremacists and neo-Nazis, echoing that hatred has no place in America.
Act Now:Meeting with your legislators is one of the most effective ways to
have a national impact. Recently, more than 10 Days in the District
have taken place, there's still time to organize a meeting with your
elected official during a legislative recess. Please reach out to advocacy@hadassah.org for assistance with planning a Day in the District.
A very successful & entertaining Hadassah fundrasising event took place on August 6 at The Reserve. Thank you to Lori Karbel & her committee: Linda Bartlett, Nancy Haney, Lisa Kramer, Alex Newman. Look at all the happy faces!!
YOUTH ALIYAH/CHILDREN AT RISK
Michael Ankis 17, came to Hadassah Neurim from Jerusalem in
September 2016. He needed a lot of help with his schoolwork, but is now
doing so well that he is studying environmental science and is on his path to a full degree. He credits
the staff for their support and for helping him move forward.
The village is beautiful and sitting by the Mediterranean is
inspiring. He enjoys sports, surfing and drawing. He surfs there and
has the equipment he needs. When he feels like it and wants to paint, and gets an idea, he just paints.
Socially it seems that he and his parents made the right
decision to send him to the village. He says of the village, "wonderful".
He has many friends and can get along there and "it is fun".
While at Neurim, Michael discovered an amazing talent for
drawing. His paintings are beautiful. He contributed to the mural they
painted in his Almajor groups living area. He is practical, however; painting is a hobby and he thinks he can't rely on it
to make a living. He'd still love to sell his paintings but
doesn't think it would be a safe profession.
Michael wants to serve the country in the Army. Service is
important to him and after would want to get a degree but still doesn't
know what he wants to study.
You can help these children in the Youth Aliyah Villages by purchasing Youth Aliyah
Certificates which are good for any occasion:
Small Certificates are
$5 and up plus postage. Large Certificates are $15 and up plus postage.
