Dear
,
Multi-Generational Buttterfly Project - Sunday, September 24th
1 p.m. — 3 p.m.
at the Sabes JCC in Minneapolis.
The
Butterfly Project is a
grass roots arts and education initiative that memorializes the 1.5 million
children killed in the Holocaust through global displays of ceramic
butterflies—one butterfly painted for each child.
The Butterfly
Project’s messages of
hope and healing are woven together with Holocaust survivors’ courageous
stories. The moving account of survival and a lesson in the healing power of
art working its magic. The Butterfly Project is now a global memorial
with over 200 communities, including Canada,
Mexico, Israel, Australia,
France, Czech Republic,
Cuba, Morocco and Poland.
Each participant
will receive the biography of a child and a ceramic butterfly to be painted at
this event. The butterflies will be on permanent display at the JCC.
This is a multigenerational event for adults of all ages and children 8 years
and older are welcome to attend. Cost is $5.00. Registration by September 8 is
highly suggested to make sure we have enough butterflies
Please be sure to bring your ID to the event to get into the Sabes JCC.

GEM: Save
the Date! Hadassah Minneapolis and St. Paul present – Gender Equity in
Medicine, Featuring Dr. Virginia Miller, MBA, PhD, Professor, Surgery
and Physiology, Director, Women’s Health Research Center, Mayo Clinic,
Rochester, MN and a leader in this field.
Plan
to attend on Sunday, October 15, 10 a.m. at Beth El Synagogue in St.
Louis Park to learn about this issue, which is critical to our health,
and to hear what we can do to make important changes.
Why is Gender Equity in Medicine important to you and to all women? * Importance of
inclusion of female subjects in medical research
* Why women and men may have
different symptoms for the same
illnesses
* Drugs may vary as to how they affect
women vs men
* Questions to ask your doctor
A
multitude of diseases are often misdiagnosed or overlooked entirely in
women because medical research, diagnostic tools and treatments are
frequently based on male physiology. Even animal and cellular research
subjects are overwhelmingly more male than female.
Hadassah
is a leader in research, care and advocacy for Gender Equity in
Medicine. Look for an invitation in September for this important event.

The Planning Kick-off meeting for our milestone, 15th Annual Maj-a-thon will be taking place soon. All ideas
and assistance are welcomed. Please email Marci at
marsala113@hotmail.com, if you're interested in being on the planning committee. The event will be held in February.
Book Chavurot
The Night Club Book Club meets at 7 P.M. on the first Thursday of every month.
Our next meeting is September 7, 2017 at the Plymouth Library, 15700
36th Avenue North. Plymouth, MN 55446. The book we will be discussing is Life Among the Savages by Shirley Jackson. With a
novelist’s gift for character, an unfailing maternal instinct and her signature
humor, Jackson turns everyday family experiences into brilliant adventures with
her own little savages. We are always looking for new members. Contact Shelly
Levine if you are interested in joining - shellyilevine@msn.com.
The afternoon book group elected to skip its September meeting because of proximity
to Rosh Hashanah. It sends a L'Shana Tova to its Hadassah sisters, with a wish
for a sweet, fruitful, fulfilling year.
Our next time together will be Oct.
18, 12:30 p.m., in the Plymouth Library on Vicksburg Lane. We'll quickly discuss
of A Fall of Marigolds by Susan Meissner. [2014], a book due its 10 minutes in
the sun, after 2 delays. Then we'll discuss
Salt to the Sea by Ruta
Sepetys,
Winter, 1945. 4 teens, each with a secret. A retired cobbler. A small boy.
Refugees from Poland, East Prussia, Germany, and Lithuania merge, seeking
passage on the Wilhelm Gustoff, a ship leaving the war zone. Sepetys’ tale of hope and affirmation brings
us into a little-known episode near WWII’s end. Voted the top Goodreads
juvenile lit. book of 2016. We'll end the year with
Secrets of a Charmed Life by Susan Meissner [2015] on
Nov. 15
and
sharing our favorite recent reads on December 20th.
We have decided to support
Hadassah's stem cell research this year, and have been collecting
members' donations. We remain open to visitors and new members. Join us
in October, November or December and meet the group.
The Szold Knollwood Book Group meets every month for a lively discussion of a
variety of book titles. We meet the
fourth Wednesday of most months at Knollwood Place Apartments, 3630 Phillips Pkwy.,
St. Louis Park, in the board room
at 1:00 p.m. I say most months depending
on our holiday calendar dates. The
following titles have been chosen for the remainder of the year. An additional list will be presented as we
near 2018 so that everyone has time to get the books from our wonderful public
library system. I have checked with the
library and all of the titles listed have large print, e-books and audio books
available. To reserve a book or arrange for delivery directly to you call
612-543-8850. Be sure to do so in plenty
of time to read all or some of the book.
It makes for interesting discussions when we all can participate. However, that said, everyone is welcome just
to sit in and hear the story.

Spring Fundraising Campaign Wrap-up
Thank you to all of you who so generously supported our
Spring Campaign! We raised $4,801. We also had 51 members who donated to this
campaign who did not donate last year, and we distributed 49 pins to
individuals who made a new donation of $36 or raised their donation over last
year by 10%.
Your gifts support the life-saving research being done at
Hadassah Hospital. Hadassah is at the forefront of stem-cell research, which
has led to many new methods of treating many diseases. By analyzing the
specific biology of a breast tumor, for example, they can better tailor
treatment specifically for that tumor.
As we come to the end of summer, we really want to close the
books on our spring campaign! It is not
too late to make your donation and receive a pin. Just send your check to Nancy Peilte, 8301 Chowen Ave. S, Bloomington MN 55431.
