Dear
,
Rosh Hashanah Mum Plant Sale
Every fall Hadassah Minneapolis highlights the holiday of Rosh Hashanah with our annual Mum Plant Sale. This event provides the opportunity to send sweet New Year’s wishes to family and friends with the purchase of a colorful 14” tall mum plant. If you have been a fortunate recipient of this gift in the past, now is the time to reciprocate or you can donate a plant to a Sholom Home resident who has no family. If you are interested in helping to deliver these plants, please contact Shelly Levine shellyilevine@msn.com 612-597-3349. The order form was sent in July so use that to place your orders and check the box to help with deliveries. To view and print the flyer, click here.
Multi-Generational Buttterfly Project - Sunday, September 24th
Mark
your calendars for Sunday, September 24, from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. We are
joining with the Sabes JCC to commemorate the 1.5 million children who
lost their lives during the Holocaust. We are participating in the
Butterfly Project, an international program to honor their memories.
Participants will learn about the project, receive a biography of a
child, and paint a ceramic butterfly. The butterflies will be on
permanent display at the JCC. This project is ongoing around the world
until 1.5 million butterflies are created. This program is for children 8
years and older as well as adults of all ages. Watch for a flyer to
arrive in your mailboxes in the next few weeks or click here to view and print it.
GEM: Save
the Date! Hadassah Minneapolis and St. Paul present – Gender Equity in
Medicine, Featuring Dr. Virginia Miller, MBA, PhD, Professor, Surgery
and Physiology, Director, Women’s Health Research Center, Mayo Clinic,
Rochester, MN and a leader in this field.
Plan
to attend on Sunday, October 15, 10 a.m. at Beth El Synagogue in St.
Louis Park to learn about this issue, which is critical to our health,
and to hear what we can do to make important changes.
Why is Gender Equity in Medicine important to you and to all women? * Importance of
inclusion of female subjects in medical research
* Why women and men may have
different symptoms for the same
illnesses
* Drugs may vary as to how they affect
women vs men
* Questions to ask your doctor
A
multitude of diseases are often misdiagnosed or overlooked entirely in
women because medical research, diagnostic tools and treatments are
frequently based on male physiology. Even animal and cellular research
subjects are overwhelmingly more male than female.
Hadassah
is a leader in research, care and advocacy for Gender Equity in
Medicine. Look for an invitation in September for this important event.

Book Chavurot
This month the NightClub book group and Afternoon
book group are reading the same book - Noah Hawley's Before the Fall. Both
meet at the Plymouth Library, 15700 36th Avenue North. The evening
group will meet at 7 on August 3 (first Thursday of the month) and the afternoon
group at 12:30 on August 16 (third Wednesday of the month). This book is about
a painter and a wealthy 4 year boy who are the sole survivors of a plane
crash. Before the Fall looks at human nature and
the ties which bind people to each other.
The Afternoon group will not meet in September, but will re-convene on October 18 to
recap Susan Meissner's A Fall of Marigolds, linking past and
present, the Triangle Factory fire and World Trade Center collapse.
Both groups welcome
new members. For the NightClub group,
contact Shelly Levine shellyilevine@msn.com and for the afternoon group contact
eabrons@earthlink.net
The Szold Knollwood Book Group meets every month for a lively discussion of a
variety of book titles. We meet the
fourth Wednesday of most months at Knollwood Place Apartments, 3630 Phillips Pkwy.,
St. Louis Park, in the board room
at 1:00 p.m. I say most months depending
on our holiday calendar dates. The
following titles have been chosen for August through December. An additional list will be presented as we
near 2018 so that everyone has time to get the books from our wonderful public
library system. I have checked with the
library and all of the titles listed have large print, e-books and audio books
available. To reserve a book or arrange for delivery directly to you call
612-543-8850. Be sure to do so in plenty
of time to read all or some of the book.
It makes for interesting discussions we can all participate in. However, that said, everyone is welcome just
to sit in and here the story.

Membership Update
As Hadassah members, we support Israel, all
the cutting-edge medical research that is happening at Hadassah Hospital and
the women’s health initiatives at the National level. (For more information on the medical research
being done at Hadassah Hospitals, go to Hadassah.org and click on Health and
Medicine.) We are also proud of the three Youth Villiages we support in
Israel. Hadassah Minneapolis is also
involved at the local level and we're looking for people who can join us as we serve people staying in Ronald
McDonald House, teaming with other Jewish organizations to offer programs of interest to the
community, setting up for our plant sale, offering fresh ideas for programming, and
helping us with planning. They may be women who are involved on a more regular basis, from our chapter
presidents Debby Jewett and Barbara Parks, to the rest of the board and the
office volunteers. Just as valuable are
those who come forward for a special event, such as the host of the very
successful Schmoozathon, Tina Rafowitz.
If you are interested in serving on any of our committees or
in participating in any of our many chavurot or if you know of anyone who would be
interested in becoming a member, please contact Barb Lebowitz at barbaralebowitz1900@gmail.com
or 952-544-0874 or Terry Hallfin at terrybmn@visi.com
763-588-5597. We would be most happy to
help you find your niche in Hadassah Minneapolis.
Cultural Clique
The cultural clique will start up again in the fall. We
are starting the year with the play "All The Way" at the History Theater in St.
Paul. It takes place in 1963, the time of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Hubert
H. Humphrey, LBJ, and Bobby Kennedy and it traces the first year of LBJ’s
presidency. The play runs October 7-29, 2017, and if we have a group of 10 we
can get a group rate. Look for more details in the September News You Can
use.
Walking Group
Ah,
summer in Minnesota. We wait all year
for this beautiful season. The walking
group takes advantage of summer by walking on different paths throughout the
city or around our lakes. We enjoy this
all-too-short season with good company and get exercise all in one fell
swoop. New walkers are always
welcome. We walk Tuesday and Thursday
mornings from 10:30 to 11:30. Contact
Terry Hallfin at terrybmn@visi.com for
more information.
Craft Co-op
What a gorgeous day we had at the Schmoozathon last month where our table of hand made tote bags, guest towels, challah covers and matzah covers, toys, aprons & matching potholders were selling like the proverbial “hotcakes.” We have a wonderful inventory of great gifts for weddings, birthdays, and just to give to someone special to say “I love you”, or “thank you for your friendship.” Call Debby Wolk for a private showing of our inventory. She is happy to assist you in picking out the right item for your special recipient. You can reach her by phone at 612-925-7932 or by email at tzvibo@aol.com. Don’t miss an opportunity to give someone a gift whose proceeds go directly to Hadassah’s hospital and research funds.
Defining Zionism in the 21st Century
This is an excellent video series on the National Hadassah website. Hadassah invites thoughtful, engaging speakers to
talk about Zionism from his/her personal perspective. Sessions are divided into
short videos, enabling you to watch at your convenience, one after the other or
spread out over hours or days. Speakers—scholars, activists and community
leaders—will have you thinking in new ways about Israel, Zionism, and how they
relate to you. The program is free of charge and open to all. Find this series
