Hadassah Minneapolis Spring Campaign: Research in Service to Humanity at HMO
The
medical research we do today can change the world tomorrow. Diseases
that once decimated entire populations no longer exist. Will we be able
to say that one day soon about cancer, heart disease, and diabetes?
Hadassah
Medical Organization (HMO) is internationally recognized for decades of
leadership in stem cell research, and for immunotherapies that marshal
the body’s own resources to fight disease. The stunning results of HMO
clinical trials for potential treatments of ALS and other
neurodegenerative diseases have riveted the worldwide medical community.
HMO
physicians are researchers. HMO researchers are physicians. They work
tirelessly to relieve suffering and minimize pain. Their sophisticated,
visionary medical research is leading the way to a better quality of
life for people around the globe.
It
is not too late to make your donation to the 2017 Spring Campaign. For a
new gift of $36 or more, you will receive a beautiful Sarah Wetsman
Davidson Tower pin. Send your donation to Nancy Peilte, 8301 Chowen Ave
S, Bloomington MN, 55431.
Chai Society
SAVE LIVES. $15 a month. 12 months a year.
When you are a member of Chai Society, Hadassah can count on you, month after month, year after year. It is your commitment that makes the difference. We make it easy. We will automatically charge your monthly gift of $15 to your credit card, or double your impact with $30 a month at the Silver Chai level. If you prefer, you can make one annual payment of $180 to $360. These contributions enable you to help save a life, to be part of something big, something vital. Invest in the future of Israel and medicine by choosing to be an annual giver of $180 - $999. Contact Sarene Silver, sarenesilver@comcast.net for more information.
Rosh Hashanah Mum Plant Sale
Every fall Hadassah Minneapolis highlights the holiday of Rosh Hashanah with our annual Mum Plant Sale. This event provides the opportunity to send sweet New Year’s wishes to family and friends with the purchase of a colorful 14” tall mum plant. If you have been a fortunate recipient of this gift in the past, now is the time to reciprocate --- or you can donate a plant to a Sholom Home resident who has no family.
The heart of this event involves MANY GRACIOUS VOLUNTEERS who deliver these beautiful plants, who love seeing the joy on each person’s face when handing the plant to the recipient. WE NEED DRIVERS THIS YEAR. Help Hadassah Minneapolis make this year’s plant sale momentous with your plant orders and PLEASE consider the Mitzvah of becoming a volunteer driver to make this fundraising endeavor complete. Delivery dates are Wednesday, September 13, Thursday, September 14, and Sunday, September 17.
If you are interested in delivering, please contact Shelly Levine at shellyilevine@msn.com (612)597-3349. Also watch for your flyer in July to place your orders and check the box to help with deliveries.
Book Chavurot
The Night Club Book Club usually meets at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. However, we are meeting Thursday, June 8 this month at the Plymouth Library, 15700 36th Avenue North. The book we will be discussing is Devil in Jerusalem by Naomi Ragen. Two brothers are admitted to Jerusalem’s Hadassah Hospital with horrific injuries. Their young American mother devoutly recites Psalms at the bedside, but refuses to answer questions. Detective Tzedek follows clues through Jerusalem’s Old City, kabbalism, mystical ancient texts, and terrifying cult rituals until she uncovers the truth. Some of the members meet for dinner before the meeting. It makes for a fun evening and we are always looking for new members. Contact Shelly Levine if you are interested in joining us at shellyilevine@msn.com.
Hadassah's new Afternoon Book Group will meet on Wednesday, June 21, 12:30 p.m., in the Plymouth Library along the far right wall. We'll be discussing Saving Sophie by Ronald Balson. Chicago accountant Jack Sommers' wife passes away, his daughter is kidnapped, and he becomes an embezzlement suspect trying to avoid the feds as he rescues his daughter Sophie. In the process, his team is caught in the Palestine-Israeli conflict.
The Afternoon Book Group also will meet on Wednesday, July 19, 12:30 p.m., also in the Plymouth library, for the mystery She's Not There: A Novel by Joy Fielding. Carole enjoyed visiting Mexico until her infant daughter was kidnapped there. Fifteen years later, divorced and isolated, she's called by a girl claiming to be that long-lost daughter. When Carole tries to figure out what has happened, the answers are dangerously close to home. For reading ahead, our August 16th book is Before The Fall by Noah Hawley. We'll finish the year with A Fall of Marigolds by Susan Meissner, Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, Secrets of a Charmed Life also by Susan Meissner, and a Reader's Choice discussion in December about books each of us has enjoyed recently.
All gatherings are open to Hadassah members, friends, and family. Please consider beach-reading one of these books and joining us or attending in December to share with us a book you have liked.
Care Package Mitzvah Project to
Help Those in Need
Some of our members have suggested that our chapter initiate a Mitzvah Project
creating "care packages" for those we see asking for help on the street
corners. If this is a project that you would like to work on or even help to
organize or perhaps chair, please contact Susan Garnett at nettgar1@gmail.com. Your input would
be deeply appreciated.
Walking Group
It’s June. Six months
ago we all made New Year’s resolutions. How are you doing with your resolution to get more exercise? Let Hadassah Minneapolis’ walking group help
you get your 10,000 steps in. We meet on
Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30. If an hour is too long for you, you can walk
as long as possible and then go on your merry way. When it is nice out, we walk outside on
different trails around our beautiful city. Bad weather finds us inside. But
no matter the weather, we walk and talk. Please join us. For more information,
contact Terry Hallfin at terrybmn@visi.com.
Membership Update
We had a wonderful turnout of 50 people for the May program "Decluttering 101". Did you miss someone you usually see at Hadassah events? Contact them, re-connect. Reaching out to members we have not seen in awhile really makes a difference. We look forward to seeing you at the next program, our annual Schmoozathon, on Wednesday, July 12th. Look for your flyer arriving this month. As always, please invite your friends to join you at this event. Offer to bring them. Please refer any potential new member to either Barb Lebowitz at barblebowitz@gmail.com or Terry Hallfin at terrybmn@visi.com. We look forward to growing our chapter with your assistance.

It’s a Win-Win for You and Hadassah!
Become a taste-tester for Food Perspectives, Inc. Every time you qualify for and participate in a survey, you will be paid an incentive of approximately $35 to $85, based upon the time the survey session takes. In addition to that amount, Hadassah Minneapolis will be paid $10. Men and women who sign up to be testers must be between the ages of 18 and 84. (Demographic reality: being ages 18 through 65 seems to qualify the person for a greater number of surveys, based upon past experiences of some of our members-although from time to time there are opportunities for participants over age 65).
If you are interested in participating--or know someone
(friend, relative, son, daughter, grandchild, etc.) who would like to
participate--registration can be done on-line at www.fpitesters.com.
Click on the tab “Become a Tester.” When you select from the list of
non-profit organizations for the $10 payment, please select, “Hadassah Minneapolis Chapter.” If you prefer to register by phone, please call
Food Perspectives, Inc. at 763-354-2776. Remember, this is a fundraiser
that is a “win” for Hadassah and for the participant.
