PRESIDIUM MESSAGE
This year, we start June with the holiday of Shavuot, a celebration
both of Moses receiving the Torah and of the traditional wheat harvest.
Writing this letter, we began to think about gathering in the wheat and
paying attention to what’s left at the edges of the field. We believe
that we, the Rochester Chapter women, need to be proud of all those
whom we have gathered in and mindful of those at the edges.
Last
month, our Membership Coordinators, Lori Friedman and Harriett Shulman,
with their wonderful committee, welcomed our newest members and
encouraged those around the edges to get involved in Hadassah’s mission.
Let us explain how Hadassah Hospitals in Israel gather together medical heroes and those in need.
Argentinian physician, Dr. Malena Cohen, has worked in the Hadassah
Medical Organization’s Pediatric Pulmonology unit since 2003. She is
well known for helping colleagues in different countries create
multidisciplinary cystic fibrosis (CF) care centers. Dr. Cohen says,
“Everyone respects me as a doctor and I respect all patients equally.
Many don’t share my way of life and probably not my political ideas, but
you go to the hospital to treat patients, to try to reduce suffering;
tolerance is something I learned at Hadassah.” In addition to setting up
the CF clinic at HMO, she has also advised and trained personnel at new
clinics in Santiago, Chile, Montevideo, Uruguay, and in Gaza. She adds,
“Under the layer of our appearance, we are all the same – whether
wearing a turban or a wig. The diseases are the same; the suffering of a
baby, a mom or dad is exactly the same.”
This year, Dr. Cohen
ran the Jerusalem Marathon, along with 35,000 people from 60 countries.
She was joined by runners from Hadassah Medical Center and Hadassah Meir
Shfeya Youth Village. Running also was Head Pediatric Nurse Bracha
Grossman. Grossman received her master’s degree in clinical nursing from
the Hebrew University-Henrietta Szold School of Nursing. At 37,
Grossman was delighted to run a marathon in her home town. She proudly
represented Hadassah’s nursing tradition of nearly 100 years. In,
addition, Dov Guggenheim, a patient at Hadassah’s MS (multiple
sclerosis) clinic, proudly ran with Hadassah’s contingent. You, too,
can join the HMO team running the Jerusalem Marathon next year. Come and
be gathered in!
You have an opportunity to represent the
Rochester Chapter at the National Business Meeting, July 18-19, 2017 at
the Ritz-Carlton in St. Louis, Missouri. Any member in good standing of
our chapter may serve as a delegate, vote on policy positions, and
elections. A distinguished panel on anti-Semitism, a celebration of the
reunification of Jerusalem and Hadassah, a workshop using Hadassah’s
Every Bite Counts program, and much more await the delegates at this
information packed two-day meeting. The National Associates Meeting will
take place at the same time. Please let us know if you wish to be a
delegate from the Rochester Chapter.
Join our gathering and don’t leave your friends on the edges. We wish you a chag sameach Shavuot, a Happy Shavuot.

YOUTH ALIYAH/CHILDREN AT RISK
Nancy Falchuk Enrichment Center Dedicated at Meir Shfeyah Village
Teenagers who live and study at the Meir Shfeyah Youth Village were
gifted with the Nancy Falchuk Enrichment Center, a beautiful new
facility where they will get help on their homework, prepare for exams and engage with each other. The large
study hall, donated by Hadassah is adjacent to the village synagogue and is encased in glass windows that
look out on the Carmel Hills. The center was dedicated in the presence of
Nancy Falchuk, a famous operating room nurse and medical administrator who also served as Hadassah's 24th
National President from 2007-2011. Also in attendance was her husband
Dr. Kenneth Falchuk and a large group of friends and colleagues including Youth Aliyah Chair Carol Goodman Kaufman.
Students receive tutoring on their homework and
individualized help to close educational gaps. The new complex includes
offices for the school psychologist and counselors.
Many children have found an education, a home and help
healing rifts with family at Meir Shfeyah, a Youth Aliyah Village, part of
a program that sets at risk children in Israel on a path to a successful future. Since 1934, over 300,000 young people from 80 lands have graduated from Youth Aliyah.
We can help these students by purchasing Youth Aliyah
Certificates which are good for any occasion:
Small Certificates are
$5 and up plus postage. Large Certificates are $15 and up plus postage.
