Dear ,

Don't Miss the May 15th Decluttering Workshop!

Sort toss pack

An expert from Sort Toss Pack, a St. Paul-based company, will offer tips and advice on how to declutter your home at 7 pm Monday, May 15. The workshop, held in the Minneapolis Federation’s first-floor board room, is a great opportunity for anyone who is considering downsizing, helping her parents downsize, or who just has too much “stuff.”

Cost is $10. The flyer is attached here if you didn't receive yours in the mail.  For more information, contact Stacey Bush, staceyrbush@gmail.com; 952-929-2076 (evenings). Need a ride? Note that when you return your reservation and we’ll make arrangements!

Book Chavurot

The Night Club Book Group meets at 7 P.M. on the first Thursday of each month. Our next gathering will be May 4, 2017 in the Plymouth Library, 15700 36th Avenue North (off of Vicksburg Lane North). We will be meeting in the small meeting room along the far right wall. The book we will be discussing on May 4th is Saving Sophie by Ronald Balson. Chicago accountant Jack Sommers' wife passes away, his daughter is kidnapped and he becomes an embezzlement suspect trying to avoid the feds and rescue his daughter, Sophie. His team is caught in the crossfire of the Palestine-Israeli conflict, hoping to save countless lives, including their own, in the process.

On June 8, we will be discussing Devil in Jerusalem by Naomi Ragen.  Two brothers are admitted to Jerusalem’s Hadassah Hospital with horrific injuries. Their young American mother devoutly recites Psalms at the bedside, but refuses to answer questions. Detective Tzedek follows clues through Jerusalem’s Old City, kabbalism, mystical ancient texts, and terrifying cult rituals until she uncovers the truth.

Our next discussion in the Afternoon Book Group will be on May 17th, 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Plymouth Library in back, along the right wall.  We'll be deep into Lake Country, a debut novel by Sean Doolittle.  A mystery set in the Twin Cities and northern MN, it's been called “Midwestern Noir.”  “Complex and quirky… story of revenge and redemption” featuring a Minneapolis architect, an ex-Marine, a reporter, a bounty hunter, and “law enforcement officials and other parties with superego agendas.”  A perfect spring "read."   Join us and see.

On June 21, also 12:30-2:00 p.m. in Plymouth Library, we'll discuss Saving Sophie by Ronald Balson.  See above.

The afternoon group is led by a different member each month.

Both the Night Club and the afternoon group welcome guests, so bring your friends and join us for some interesting discussions.

Hadassah's larger evening group meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month at members' homes. Contact Stacey Bush with questions at staceyrbush@gmail.com or 952-929-2076. This group is not taking new members at this time as it is full.

Annual Schmoozathon is July 12th 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Enjoy great food, schmoozing around the pool, games of your choice, and surprise entertainment!

Watch for the flyer in your mail later this Spring!   Email Marlys Buchler with any questions at: marlysbuchler@gmail.com.

Membership Update

We have two events coming up:  Decluttering 101 program on May 15 at 7 p.m. and the Schmoozathon on July 12 from 11-3.  Both of these events would be perfect to invite someone who might be interested in joining Hadassah or even a member who hasn’t participated recently.  We always welcome new members, just as we are always happy to see old friends.  Once again, when you are at a Hadassah event, please introduce yourself to the people you don’t know.  The only way to keep new members is to make them feel comfortable and know we are happy they are with us.

Please email your referrals to either Barb Lebowitz at barblebowitz@gmail.com or Terry Hallfin at terrybmn@visi.com.

Hadassah to Celebrate 1967 Return of Mount Scopus Hospital and 50th Anniversary of the Reunification of Jerusalem at May 25 Ceremony with Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat

Hadassah will celebrate the 1967 return of its Mount Scopus hospital and the 50th Anniversary of the Reunification of Jerusalem at a May 25th ceremony with Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, according to Ellen Hershkin, 26th National President of Hadassah.  The May 25 ceremony will re-create the memorable “key return” ceremony when then-Hadassah National President Charlotte Jacobson received a commemorative key to Hadassah Mount Scopus from Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kollek, reuniting Hadassah’s two hospitals in Jerusalem. The Mount Scopus hospital, which was closed after the 1948 attack on a convoy of hospital personnel, had become a UN-protected Israeli exclave guarded by Israeli security forces.

Hershkin, citing the vital humanitarian role Hadassah’s two Jerusalem hospitals -- Mount Scopus and Ein Kerem -- played in the Reunification, states, “Hadassah is the heartbeat of Jerusalem and our hospitals have always served as an oasis of healing and a tower of hope for the entire population of Israel – Jewish, Arab, Christian and others." The May 25 ceremony will honor the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice to Jerusalem’s Reunification and pay tribute to those people whose tireless efforts have made HMO a modern complex that rivals the best hospitals and research facilities anywhere in the world.

Hop a Ride to a Hadassah Meeting

Hadassah Minneapolis events should be shared by all. So everyone can attend, we have created a carpool system that we call "Hop-a-Ride." Anyone willing to give others a ride, please contact Bea Kampf, 763-545-4809 or bea.kampf@gmail.com to join the list. For those who need or want to ride with others, please call Bea as far ahead as possible before the event. We will do our best to make sure all Hadassah Minneapolis women can attend any event.

Perpetual Yahrzeits at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem

When a loved one dies, please consider directing memorial gifts to Hadassah.
The spirit of your family  member or friend will live on in the lives that you help to enrich and to save! All donations will be promptly acknowledged to the donor and provided to the family of the deceased.

A “Perpetual Yahrzeit” can be purchased with a one-time contribution of $1000. Kaddish will be said annually in the Abbell Synagogue at the Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem. Advance yahrzeits can be purchased at any time for yourself or a loved one.

We Americans are culturally deprived when it comes to death and dying.  Here is a link to information about a new partnership between Hadassah and shiva.com. http://www.hadassah.org/multi-media/press-releases/shivacom-partners-with.html

For information on Hadassah's Perpetual Yahrzeit program call the Hadassah Minneapolis office at
952-924-4999 or click on this link: http://www.Hadassah.org/yahrzeit. Memorial contributions of any amount may also be mailed to Hadassah Minneapolis, 13100 Wayzata Boulevard, Suite 300, Minnetonka, MN 55305.

It’s a Win-Win for You and Hadassah!

Become a taste-tester for Food Perspectives, Inc. Every time you qualify for and participate in a survey, you will be paid an incentive of approximately $35 to $85, based upon the time the survey session takes. In addition to that amount, Hadassah Minneapolis will be paid $10. Men and women who sign up to be testers must be between the ages of 18 and 84. (Demographic reality: being ages 18 through 65 seems to qualify the person for a greater number of surveys, based upon past experiences of some of our members-although from time to time there are opportunities for participants over age 65).

If you are interested in participating--or know someone (friend, relative, son, daughter, grandchild, etc.) who would like to participate--registration can be done on-line at www.fpitesters.com. Click on the tab “Become a Tester.” When you select from the list of non-profit organizations for the $10 payment, please select, “Hadassah Minneapolis Chapter.” If you prefer to register by phone, please call Food Perspectives, Inc. at 763-354-2776. Remember, this is a fundraiser that is a “win” for Hadassah and for the participant.
