Dear
,
We've Changed the Date of the Decluttering Workshop to Monday, May 15 7 p.m.
Please join Hadassah Minneapolis as we learn how to declutter our homes on
Monday, May 15 at 7 pm, in the Levine
first-floor board room of the Minneapolis Federation building. If you are
planning to downsize, want to learn how not to
collect start "collecting", want to help your parents get ready to move
or just have too much stuff, this event is for you! An expert from St.
Paul-based Sort Toss Pack will offer tips and tricks that will help you move
from overwhelmed to “I can do this!” Bring your friends, significant others
- everyone is welcome.
Cost is $10. Look for reservation details in a mailed flier.
Need a ride? Check the appropriate box on the flier and we’ll arrange
transportation. For more information, contact Stacey Bush, 952-929-2076
(evenings) or staceyrbush@gmail.com.
Book Chavurot
The Night Club Book Group meets at 7 p.m. on the first
Thursday of each month. Our next gathering will be April 6, 2017 in the Plymouth
Library, 15700 36th Avenue North (off of Vicksburg Lane North). We
will be meeting in the small meeting room along the far right wall. The book we
will be discussing on April 6th is The Invention of Wings by Sue
Monk Kidd. Inspired by Sarah Grimke’s life, real and imagined characters in 35
years of owner and slave shaping each other’s destinies. Hope, daring, the quest
for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world in early 1800’s
Charleston and a place in early abolition and woman’s rights. The book we will
be reading May 4, 2017 is Saving Sophie by Ronald Balson.
Chicago accountant Jack Sommers wife passes away, his daughter is kidnapped and
he becomes an embezzlement suspect trying to avoid the feds and rescue his
daughter, Sophie. His team is caught in the crossfires of the Palestine-Israeli
conflict, hoping to save countless lives, including their own, in the process.
The Night Club Book Group is always looking
for new members. Bring your friends along. It is a fun evening. Questions - contact Shelly Levine at shellyilevine@msn.com.
On April 19, Hadassah's Afternoon Book Group
will discuss Mudbound by Hillary Jordan. In 1946, prejudice in the Jim Crow South means that a black sharecropper’s
son, a hero, is considered less worthy than is a returning white soldier haunted
by war memories.
On May
17, we'll visit Lake
Country by Sean
Doolittle. A
quirky “Midwestern Noir” novel of revenge and redemption, which opens
with a crash on Hwy 169 and ends with a
bit of Keystone Cops-like behavior involving a reporter and other parties with superego
agendas.
We meet from
12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the
Plymouth Library, 15700 36th Ave N (off Vicksburg). The small meeting
room is along the far right wall, nearly to the other end. Hadassah members are
welcome to attend and bring a friend.
Hadassah's larger evening group meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month at members' homes. Contact Stacey Bush with questions at staceyrbush@gmail.com or 952-929-2076. This group is not taking new members at this time as it is full.
The Henrietta Szold Book Review Group will be meeting on April 27th at Knollwood Place Apartments. They will be reading She's Not There: A Novel by Joy Fielding. For questions, contact Debby Wolk at tzvibo@aol.com or 612-925-9732.

Research in Service to Humanity at HMO
The medical research we do today
can change the world tomorrow. Diseases that once decimated entire populations
no longer exist. Will we be able to say that one day soon about cancer, heart
disease, and diabetes?
Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) is internationally
recognized for decades of leadership in stem cell research, and for
immunotherapies that marshal the body’s own resources to fight disease. The
stunning results of HMO clinical trials for potential treatments of ALS and
other neurodegenerative diseases have riveted the worldwide medical community.
HMO physicians are researchers. HMO researchers are
physicians. They work tirelessly to relieve suffering and
minimize pain. Their sophisticated, visionary medical research is leading the
way to a better quality of life for people around the globe.
Stem
Cell Therapy
Twenty years ago, when stem cell therapy was highly
regulated in the United
States (as late as 2006) and other
countries, it was well underway in HMO’s labs. Stem cells have changed the
medical equation. Human embryonic stem cells have the potential to turn into
any kind of cell in the body—brain, heart, lung, retina, bone marrow—and
infinitely multiply. Adult stem cells live all over our bodies; their function
is to repair local damage. Using human embryonic stem cells, HMO scientists
have halted the deterioration of the retina in laboratory models; using
patients’ own stem cells, they have inhibited the progression of ALS in human
clinical trials. Treatments or cures for diseases like age-related macular
degeneration, ALS, MS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes could be a
reality in the foreseeable future.
Multiple
Sclerosis (MS)
Preventing Nerve Degeneration. A world-first study at
HMO treating MS patients with adult stem cells injected into the spinal cord
revealed that disease progression stopped and most patients improved.
Amyotrophic
Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
Ninety percent of ALS study patients at HMO showed
improved respiration or motor function after treatment with stem cells from
their own bone marrow.
Age-Related
Macular Degeneration
Hadassah researchers halted deterioration of the
retina in animal models using human embryonic stem cells. Now, AMD patients are
in a groundbreaking clinical trial.

It’s a Win-Win for You and Hadassah!
Become a taste-tester for Food Perspectives, Inc. Every time you qualify for and participate in a survey, you will be paid an incentive of approximately $35 to $85, based upon the time the survey session takes. In addition to that amount, Hadassah Minneapolis will be paid $10. Men and women who sign up to be testers must be between the ages of 18 and 84. (Demographic reality: being ages 18 through 65 seems to qualify the person for a greater number of surveys, based upon past experiences of some of our members-although from time to time there are opportunities for participants over age 65).
If you are interested in participating--or know someone
(friend, relative, son, daughter, grandchild, etc.) who would like to
participate--registration can be done on-line at www.fpitesters.com.
Click on the tab “Become a Tester.” When you select from the list of
non-profit organizations for the $10 payment, please select, “Hadassah Minneapolis Chapter.” If you prefer to register by phone, please call
Food Perspectives, Inc. at 763-354-2776. Remember, this is a fundraiser
that is a “win” for Hadassah and for the participant.

Cards are available at board meetings and Hadassah events. If you wish you can call or email card contacts below who will sign and mail the card out upon receiving your check.
