Save the Date - Sunday, April 25th

Do you have old copies of "National Geographic" piling up in your basement? Is your married child's former bedroom a shrine to their childhood? You need to attend our Decluttering Event Tuesday, April 25 at 7 pm!

Hadassah Minneapolis is still planning this fun evening, so we can't give you any details yet. But you're sure to pick up some tips from the Sort Toss Pack business that will get you started toward a more orderly lifestyle! Mark your calendars to save the date, and look for a flyer as the date gets closer. To help with the planning, please contact Stacey Bush at staceyrbush@gmail.com.

Book Chavurot

The Night Club Book Group meets @ 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. Our next gathering will be March 2, 2017 in the Plymouth Library, 15700  36th Avenue North, (Off Vicksburg). We’ll be in the small room along the far right wall, near the end. We will be discussing The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney and on April 6, 2017 we will be discussing The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd.

We have changed the June 1, 2017 meeting to June 8, 2017 because June 1, 2017 is SHAVUOT.  We have also changed the October 5, 2017 meeting to October 10, 2017 which is a Tuesday, because October 5, 2017 is the Holiday SUKKOT. We hope everyone will be able to attend. Night Club Book Club is always open up to new members. For questions about this group, contact Shelly Levine at shellyilevine@msn.com.

The Hadassah Afternoon Book Group will meet on March 15  to discuss the book Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda.  It explores motherhood, loss, and love as shown through two families, one American and one Indian, and the child they share who was adopted from a Mumbai orphanage.  Their daughter feels lonesome in America, and returns to India and Mumbai's Dharavi slum.

Our April 19 book is  Mudbound by Hillary Jordan.  In 1946, prejudice was both subtle and brutal.  Being a returning soldier brought no benefits for a hero who also was a black sharecropper’s son in the Jim Crow South. His unlikely friendship with a returning white soldier drives this powerful novel.

Our group meets at 12:30 p.m. on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.  We welcome all Hadassah members, their family and friends, to join us for the discussions.  Our meetings during 2017 will be in the Plymouth Library, 15700 36th Ave N  (off Vicksburg), in the small meeting room along the far right wall.  If you have questions, please contact eabrons@earthlink.net.

Hadassah's larger evening group meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month at members' homes. Contact Stacey Bush with questions at staceyrbush@gmail.com or 952-929-2076. This group is not taking new members at this time as it is full. They'll be reading and discussing:

March 8: Together Tea by Marjan Kamali (2013), 321 p.

Cultural Clique

The cultural clique is attending Fiddler on the Roof that will be presented thru March 19, 2017, by the Ten Thousand Things Theater company.  It will be presented at a variety of sites around the city. Membership

Welcome to our new members:
Barbara Brooks
Candee Kvasnick
Jordana Greene

Thank you to those who made referrals for new members.

We are always looking for new members to keep Hadassah Minneapolis strong and we need your help.  May we suggest gifting a friend or relative with an annual or lifetime membership?  Another way to strengthen our chapter would be to invite a Hadassah member who has not attended an event in a while to go with you to the joint program with Adath Jeshurun Women's League on March 19 as we "Explore with Sven." Look for the flyer for complete details on the program.  Email Barb Lebowitz at barblebowitz@gmail.com or Terry Hallfin at terrybmn@visi.com to suggest ideas for growing our organization.

Spring News From Our Crafters

Our wonderful, creative Hadassah members have been busy refilling our inventory for the upcoming sale on March 19 at the joint meeting with the Adath Jeshurun synagogue Women’s League.  You will have an opportunity to purchase new aprons both adult and children’s sizes, oven door towel hangers, guest towels, and toys all hand made by our members. Our fairy godmother, Annette Levey, has sent us many adorable baby quilts that make the most wonderful gifts for special friends and family.   In addition there will be winter hats and scarves on sale to put away till next season. So come prepared to shop before and after the program.

Celebrating the “Z” in Hadassah, WZOA

What does Zionism mean to you today? How do you express your love and support of Israel, beyond your membership in Hadassah? We hope to answer those questions and bring stories of modern-day Zionism alive for our Hadassah magazine readers in an ongoing column, reminding us all that Zionism is more than a one-time liberation movement. It is a living, breathing principle and organizing philosophy of the Jewish people. As a member of the World Zionist Organization, Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, supports WZO’s platform, which outlines the foundations of Zionism including the following:

*The unity of the Jewish people, its bond to its historic homeland Eretz Yisrael and the centrality of the State of Israel and Jerusalem, its capital, in the life of the nation;

*Aliyah to Israel from all countries…;

*Strengthening Israel as a Jewish, Zionist and democratic state…;

*Ensuring the future and distinctiveness of the Jewish people by furthering Jewish, Hebrew and Zionist education…;

*Nurturing mutual Jewish responsibility…and struggling against all manifestations of anti-Semitism.

The above was reprinted from the award-winning Hadassah magazine. It is one of the best benefits we all get for our membership. Have you read the fantastic January/February 2017 issue? Like every issue, it includes inspiring and enlightening articles about Israel, Jewish tradition and history, as well as pieces on Jewish travel, health food and arts. The most intriguing article you may notice in the current issue is “In the Promised Land of Medical Marijuana," describing Israel’s highly advanced and regulated cannabis industry which is exporting knowledge and technology around the globe. It was fascinating and eye-opening! In addition to all that, Hadassah magazine informs us of new developments at Hadassah Medical Organization and Hadassah activities throughout the USA. And there’s a crossword puzzle!! Open your Hadassah magazine for all the above and more.

Hop a Ride to a Hadassah Meeting

Hadassah Minneapolis events should be shared by all. So everyone can attend, we have created a carpool system that we call "Hop-a-Ride." Anyone willing to give others a ride, please contact Bea Kampf, 763-545-4809 or bea.kampf@gmail.com to join the list. For those who need or want to ride with others, please call Bea as far ahead as possible before the event. We will do our best to make sure all Hadassah Minneapolis women can attend any event.

Perpetual Yahrzeits at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem

When a loved one dies, please consider directing memorial gifts to Hadassah.
The spirit of your family  member or friend will live on in the lives that you help to enrich and to save! All donations will be promptly acknowledged to the donor and provided to the family of the deceased.

A “Perpetual Yahrzeit” can be purchased with a one-time contribution of $1000. Kaddish will be said annually in the Abbell Synagogue at the Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem. Advance yahrzeits can be purchased at any time for yourself or a loved one.

We Americans are culturally deprived when it comes to death and dying.  Here is a link to information about a new partnership between Hadassah and shiva.com. http://www.hadassah.org/multi-media/press-releases/shivacom-partners-with.html

For information on Hadassah's Perpetual Yahrzeit program call the Hadassah Minneapolis office at
952-924-4999 or click on this link: http://www.Hadassah.org/yahrzeit. Memorial contributions of any amount may also be mailed to Hadassah Minneapolis, 13100 Wayzata Boulevard, Suite 300, Minnetonka, MN 55305.

It’s a Win-Win for You and Hadassah!

Become a taste-tester for Food Perspectives, Inc. Every time you qualify for and participate in a survey, you will be paid an incentive of approximately $35 to $85, based upon the time the survey session takes. In addition to that amount, Hadassah Minneapolis will be paid $10. Men and women who sign up to be testers must be between the ages of 18 and 84. (Demographic reality: being ages 18 through 65 seems to qualify the person for a greater number of surveys, based upon past experiences of some of our members-although from time to time there are opportunities for participants over age 65).

If you are interested in participating--or know someone (friend, relative, son, daughter, grandchild, etc.) who would like to participate--registration can be done on-line at www.fpitesters.com. Click on the tab “Become a Tester.” When you select from the list of non-profit organizations for the $10 payment, please select, “Hadassah Minneapolis Chapter.” If you prefer to register by phone, please call Food Perspectives, Inc. at 763-354-2776. Remember, this is a fundraiser that is a “win” for Hadassah and for the participant.
