PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
After the month of October with so many Jewish holidays, we are now able
to settle down and appreciate the relative calm that arrives with
November and the fall weather which comes with it.
Of
course we must get past the presidential election and all of the
michegas that has accompanied the political campaigning in the most
highly—some might even say traumatic-filled—contested races on all
levels of our government. No matter whom you support, please do be
certain to vote as every vote will be counted! I know how valuable the
right to vote is and vote in every primary and general election that is
held as a memorial to all of my family members who were able to
immigrate to this wonderful country and become citizens.
The
Rochester Chapter of Hadassah has a variety of activities this month
that should appeal to all members. First comes the annual card party on
the first of November hosted by the Bat Ami Group at Irondequoit Country
Club that includes a delicious luncheon; hopefully you and/or your
group has made a reservation for this enjoyable event. The second event
is what has become an annual book review and luncheon at the Highlands
of Pittsford on the tenth of November. The final event of which I’m
aware is the Hadassah afternoon of volunteering at Foodlink on the
fifteenth of November. (If you would like to join us, please contact
Dvorah Kolko as many of us leave from her house at 1 p.m.)
The
secular holiday for this month is the American Thanksgiving, which is
celebrated by everyone. If you’ve never attended the Union Thanksgiving
Service, I urge you to do so. Being able to observe the day with members
of many faiths is what I consider a unique observance. This year the
service will be held at the Baptist Temple (1101 Clover St., Brighton).
I look forward to seeing you at one or more of the events during this month.
B’Shalom,
Roz

HADASSAH NEEDS YOU!!!!!
Dear Members of the Rochester Chapter of Hadassah,
As
another Hadassah year is coming to an end, we are working on the chapter
board and committees for 2017. We are reaching out to everyone, hoping
to add new members to the board and to our committees.
As
you know, a strong and active Chapter and Board can only continue to
offer you education programs, social and fun events and other
opportunities, with the support of willing volunteers to coordinate it
all. Those of us who have had the privilege to serve on the Chapter
Board also know it is a terrific way to make connections with wonderful
people!
We hope you will consider accepting a board or
committee position for the coming year. If you are interested or would
like more information, please contact Monika Katzel, (585) 203-1200 or

IN MEMORIAM
We note with sorrow the passing of Life Members Marilyn Berman, Lee Buchman, and Hela Lipitz. May their memories be for a blessing.
INCREDIBLE TILLIE ROSE EDUCATION PROGRAM!! - RECAP
The annual Tillie Rose education event took place on September 25th this year, with the topic “Friend in Need? Being a Friend Indeed.”
With almost 100 attendees we began with
a keynote address by Rabbi Rachel Smookler on the topic of “You are the
Greatest Gift; Being present for loved ones in their time of need.”
We
heard many examples of the value of connecting with those in need, that
it is never too late to do so, and even when
it’s hard to do so, Na’aseh v’nishma – we can do it!
Following the presentation
we moved into breakout sessions. Participants could select areas
of hardship where they could learn how to better support their friend.
Each interactive session was led by a certified
professional expert who provided insight and information on community
resources.
Participants and table leaders expressed how worthwhile they found this event!
Many thanks to co-chairs
Lori Karbel and Becca Horwitz and the rest of the awesome committee: Amy Stein,
Barbara Weber, Sonya Charatz and Suzanne Seldes for their tireless
recruiting, publicizing, meeting, adapting and producing.
ROCHESTER SCHOOL MITZVAH PROJECT UPDATE
My foot was barely through the door,
when I was greeted by a big smile and hug from a darling young man,
waiting to see what was being wheeled into his classroom. Soon there
were loud cheers of hello and thank you from the rest of the class.
Our new “adopted” teacher, Nicole Berntsen and her sweet 3rd grade class
are so very grateful for a full car load of school supplies and reading
books donated by Hadassah members. What is not 3rd grade appropriate
will be distributed throughout City School #3 on Adams St.
Thank
you so much to all who donated!!
Please know what an important
contribution you are making to ensure that these students have the
necessary tools for learning.
We collect classroom
supplies and pleasure reading books all year!
Drop them off at a
Hadassah gathering, bring them to my house, or call for a pickup. Monika
