Now that September is here many families either have taken/ sent
offspring to begin the freshman year at college or are preparing to send
younger family members to school. Shopping has been completed, and all
students are ready physically to begin the next step in life whether in
Kindergarten or some higher grade. Psychologically there may be a
totally different atmosphere in the family home especially after the
shopping, packing, and coping with the absence of the departing student.
Of course time will fly so that some members will return home next
month for the High Holidays or will experience the holidays in a
different location for the first time; most will return for the secular
holiday of Thanksgiving in November.
In the Jewish calendar Tisha
B’Av has passed, and we are about to enter the month of Elul which is
the last month before the High Holidays. Many use this time for cooking,
baking, and cleaning—don’t we do this for every one of our holidays!
Others make the journey to visit the graves of family members and to
fulfill other family traditions prior to the holidays.
On Sunday,
September 25th, the Rochester Chapter of Hadassah will sponsor the
annual Tillie Rose Education program, which this year is entitled
“Friend in Need? Being a Friend, Indeed!” The program is at Temple
B’rith Kodesh from 1-3 pm. Rabbi Rachel Smookler of Temple Beth David
will be the keynote speaker, and a panel of women will discuss and
answer questions related to the theme. Topics to be addressed will offer
practical advice on how to help friends survive a variety of life
challenges. (The reservation form is found in this month’s newsletter.) I
look forward to seeing many of you there.
B’Shalom,
Roz

JANET WAGNER MEMORIAL FOOTBALL CHALLENGE
A Little Rochester Hadassah History
Did you know that our Football Challenge is over 30
years old? It was introduced to us as a fundraiser by Millie Rosenbaum. The
origins of this initiative is no longer known. Millie managed this project for
decades and introduced it to other chapters in our Region. Between 500-1000
football books were sold then and our net income was $5000-$10,000! Our
Hadassah men got involved and sold numerous tickets at work. Our members talked
up this project and sold to friends.
Janet Wagner took over management from Millie and
promoted and championed this fundraiser until her death last year. Working
behind the scenes is a devoted friend to Hadassah – Carl Wetzstein. Carl gets
the football team and game schedule from the NFL and sets up the “Challenge”
for us. Margie Wiseman has continued the tradition of her mother, Millie, with her husband, Gary, by keeping track of the weekly game results. Ticket
winners are then contacted by our Treasurer, Toby Berke. If you know more about
this project, not already mentioned here, please let us know.
Simple – Right?!
WE CAN MAKE THE FOOTBALL CHALLENGE
HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL AGAIN.
Here's How – Buy a ticket(s) – Sell a ticket(s).
Each is just $10
It's a Win/Win for you and for Hadassah
A big Thank You to Marilyn Rosen, who gets the
football books ready and to all our ticket sellers and promoters.
(Ticket buyers please note: An error was made. The game dates listed
in your booklets are correct. We neglected to update the year for this
football season. We apologize. It does not
change how the Challenge will run this year. Thank you for
understanding.)
In a few weeks, it's back to school for our area
students, ready to work and learn. Unfortunately, many will come lacking the
tools necessary for classroom participation. WE CAN HELP – by buying school
supplies for the kids at Rochester School #3. Use those back-to-school
coupons to buy paper, folders, notebooks, pencils, pens, markers and art
supplies. New or gently used pleasure reading books are always appreciated.
Bring your donations to Hadassah meetings, to me, or
call for a pickup. The students and teachers are so grateful for all your
gifts, that allow the kids to be prepared for this school year.
