PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
We have now passed the mid-point of summer and everyone is thinking
about and planning for the upcoming year including the High Holidays,
schools opening, and other beginnings. Many of us have returned from
summer travels and are settling back into our daily and weekly routines.
I hope your travels have been enjoyable and uneventful.
August finds us in the Hebrew month of Av when we recall and mourn the
destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. This holiday
is usually not commemorated by all of us; traditionally only those who
observe Orthodox or Conservative religious practices tend to make
special notice of the day by fasting and mourning those losses. However
in recent years some Reform congregations have begun to recognize the
importance of the day and study Eichah on that day. The destruction of
the temple in Jerusalem on Tisha B’Av was the first step that resulted
in the diaspora; thus this was the worst day in the history of our
people until the Shoah in the twentieth century.
As you know the Northeast Hadassah region was dissolved and we are now
members of the Central States Region. Our Regional President is Lynn
Furness who lives in the Columbus, Ohio, area; Lynn has family who live
in Fairport and regularly visits them. She will be visiting her family
this month (4-7 August) and will meet with some of us. I will report on
that meeting in my column next month.
Since the High Holidays and Succos occur during the month of October
this year the Tillie Rose Education Program will be in late September.
Information has been in our
newsletter—both the electronic and hard copy versions. I hope you will
plan to attend this Chapter program.
Until next month,
B’Shalom,
Roz

HADASSAH CONVENTION UPDATE- ROCHESTER CHAPTER IS A WINNER!
JANET WAGNER MEMORIAL FOOTBALL CHALLENGE (FORMERLY HADASSAH FOOTBALL CHANCE)
A Little Rochester Hadassah History
Did you know that our Football Challenge is over 30
years old? It was introduced to us as a fundraiser by Millie Rosenbaum. The
origins of this initiative is no longer known. Millie managed this project for
decades and introduced it to other chapters in our Region. Between 500-1000
football books were sold then and our net income was $5000-$10,000! Our
Hadassah men got involved and sold numerous tickets at work. Our members talked
up this project and sold to friends.
Janet Wagner took over management from Millie and
promoted and championed this fundraiser until her death last year. Working
behind the scenes is a devoted friend to Hadassah – Carl Wetzstein. Carl gets
the football team and game schedule from the NFL and sets up the “Challenge”
for us. Margie Wiseman has continued the tradition of her mother, Millie, with her husband, Gary, by keeping track of the weekly game results. Ticket
winners are then contacted by our Treasurer, Toby Berke. If you know more about
this project, not already mentioned here, please let us know.
Simple – Right?!
WE CAN MAKE THE FOOTBALL CHALLENGE
HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL AGAIN.
Here's How – Buy a ticket(s) – Sell a ticket(s).
Each is just $10
It's a Win/Win for you and for Hadassah
A big Thank You to Marilyn Rosen, who gets the
football books ready and to all our ticket sellers and promoters.
(Ticket buyers please note: An error was made. The game dates listed
in your booklets are correct. We neglected to update the year for this
football season. We apologize. It does not
change how the Challenge will run this year. Thank you for
understanding.)
In another month, it's back to school for our area
students, ready to work and learn. Unfortunately, many will come lacking the
tools necessary for classroom participation. WE CAN HELP – by buying school
supplies for the kids at Rochester School #3. Use those August back-to-school
coupons to buy paper, folders, notebooks, pencils, pens, markers and art
supplies. New or gently used pleasure reading books are always appreciated.
Bring your donations to Hadassah meetings, to me, or
call for a pickup. The students and teachers are so grateful for all your
gifts, that allow the kids to be prepared for this school year.

HADASSAH'S VIDEO SERIES "DEFINING ZIONISM IN THE 21ST CENTURY" CONTINUES...
Creating a Safe Space for Zionism Dialogue
The latest installment of Hadassah's provocative Defining Zionism in the
21st Century video series features Haaretz Editor-in-Chief Aluf Benn,
who talks about his deeply rooted Zionism and shares his liberal,
pragmatic approach to peace and making Israel stronger. Over 100 people
turned out on June 15 for this live session at Temple Emanu-El Skirball
Center in Manhattan, presented with The Jewish Week and moderated by
Linda Scherzer, former CNN Mideast correspondent.
"It is our intention to define and reclaim Zionism, proudly, and in so
doing, create a safe space to explore what it means for each and every
one of us," said Hadassah National President Ellen Hershkin in her
opening remarks. Please watch — and start a conversation in your own
community. What, exactly, does Zionism mean to you? Join the conversation.
