President’s Message
This newsletter has the distinction of being the shortest to
date. We have two exceptional programs
on May 8 and May 11 that will not come again.
One of the first phrases I learned in Ulpan in Jerusalem many decades
ago was the phrase – the opportunity only comes once -- הזדמנות בלתי חוזרת.
Come and be
with us.
Susan Adler, President
Seattle Hadassah
Israeli Chefs Are
Cooking for Hadassah on the Evening of May 8 – Note New Date!
What better way to celebrate our mothers -- the Power of Women Who Do –than by bringing
your entire family to Shevet Achim on Sunday evening from 6:00 – 8:30 pm. After you take your mom to brunch or afternoon
lunch, join us for a festive way to close this special day with friends across
our Seattle Hadassah community.
This is a family tasting event for all who love Israeli food.
Everyone is invited to visit stations manned by chefs Dalia Amon and Lily Golan. Each of these
talented chefs is volunteering their time to teach us how to prepare their
favorite recipes. Come and network while
sampling their delicious creations. Click here to RSVP
by this Friday, May 6.
Fun activities for our children include face painting and cookie
decorating. We can also take your photo
and turn it into a magnet to capture this day! And, all who come will receive a unique measuring spoon as a gift.
We need volunteers to help set up the room,
organize the tasting table, put together recipe cards and help at the kids’
cookie table. Ruti Cohenca, our VP for Programming, has planned the most
creative of events. Please contact her
directly at ruti@events-4life.com. to discuss how you can best assist.
Cost: $10 - adult; free for children under 11
years.
Our May 11th Evening Salon
Proudly Presents Dr. Charlie and Rebecca Sprung from Hadassah Hospital
The response to our evening salon series has been extraordinary. Every nonprofit must evolve with the
community it serves. The Seattle
Hadassah Board and I are learning that these new salons, hosted in private
homes, allow us to communicate Hadassah’s mission – Research in Service to Humanity – in powerful ways.
We have an exceptional opportunity that has presented itself on May 11th.
Dr. Charles
Sprung and his wife Rebecca made Aliyah in 1987 from Brooklyn. Their life work
has been devoted to Hadassah Hospital. Charlie is an MD., Attorney and bioethicist
and has led the Intensive Care Unit at Hadassah. He is known internationally
for his research on how decisions and communications between patient and doctor
occur inside the emergency room -- decisions that are influenced by country and
religious beliefs. He is a dynamic
speaker with a dry sense of humor.
Contact me directly at sadler@hadassah.org if you wish to peruse one
of Charlie’s research studies in advance of his talk. As an example, I highly recommend “The
importance of religious affiliation and culture on end-of-life decisions in
European intensive care units”.
Rebecca has
been serving in the Diabetes Unit at Hadassah for the past 22 years. She is an integral part of the team that
writes and edits academic publications about Hadassah’s international expertise
in the prevention and treatment of diabetes. They are in Seattle for only a few days; we are fortunate to have them
with us to share their stories.
Special thanks
to Susan Edelheit for opening up her gracious Mercer Island home for this
evening. We have capacity for 35
people. Hadassah Members, prospective
members, Hadassah Associates are all welcome. While there is no cost to register, you must let us know your plans for
joining us. We will be inviting you to
make a personal contribution to support Hadassah Hospital and its research.
