President's Message

Karen Kessler grn.png

“How did it get so late so soon? Its night before its afternoon. December is here before its June. My goodness how the time has flown. How did it get so late so soon?” -- Dr. Seuss

I couldn’t have said it better. 2024 is quickly coming to a close, and as I reflect on my first year as Region President and Hadassah’s remarkable accomplishments, I am struck by just how busy it has been. Much of Hadassah’s focus was on the war in Israel and its ripple effects here in America. For many American Jews, it was the first time they truly felt the impact of war – whether through witnessing it, being affected personally, or hearing about the events and the rise in antisemitism.

One of my most vivid childhood memories is hearing sirens during the Yom Kippur war, followed by running with my parents down three flights of stairs from our apartment to the shelter under our apartment building. We spent hours there, listening to the transistor radio until we were told it was safe to return to our routines – weather it be school, work or back home.

I can’t even imagine what children in Israel are going through right now. What kind of childhood memories will they have after living through a global pandemic and now a prolonged war? Recently, my nephew took his family from Israel to a vacation in Holland during sukkot. His 6-year-old daughter, my great niece, asked if there are rockets in Holland too. She was so excited and relived to learn that there were not.
This is where we, at Hadassah, can make a difference. “Together We Will Heal” is an effort to support both the physical and mental rehabilitation of the people of Israel at the Gandel Rehabilitation center at Hadassah Mount Scopus.

Read more about the effort here.

Hadassah has secured a one-million-dollar match for any new donations made to the Gandel Rehabilitation center. Please consider making a contribution to help heal the bodies and minds of the people of Israel.

Like the Talmud says: “Whoever saves one life saves the world entire.”

Wishing you and your family a very Happy and MeaningfulThanksgiving. I assure you we have much to be grateful for. I am extremely appreciative for your continued support.
