If your Hadassah chapter will be returning to in person events, local units are required to follow state and local laws and regulations, the current CDC guidelines and recommendations as well as the following Hadassah protocols in order to conduct activities in the safest and healthiest manner possible. Please note: applicable Florida law states that businesses operating in Florida may not require patrons/customers to provide any documentation certifying COVID-19 vaccination or post-infection recovery to gain access to or receive services from the business. These protocols have been mailed to chapter leadership. CAR T-CELL THERAPY OFFERS HOPE TO CANCER PATIENTS AT HADASSAH

Only three countries in the world – the U.S., China, and Israel – currently offer CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) T-cell therapy for cancer patients. Thanks to the efforts of Hadassah researchers, treatment in Israel is considerably less expensive than anywhere else.
Offered at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem, CAR T-cell therapy is a way to get immune cells, called T-cells (a type of white blood cell) to fight cancer by changing them in the lab so they can find and destroy cancer cells. Such therapy is also sometimes talked about as a type of cell-based gene therapy because it involves altering the genes inside T-cells to help them attack the cancer. Professor Polina Stepensky, who came to Israel from Ukraine, brought this therapy to Israel. At first she used the American therapy, subsequently developing her own at much less expense.
It’s already saving lives. Uri Lahav-Goldshmid, 49, a sahbra father of three, is an occupational therapist. His mother is the president of Hadassah Israel Mod ‘in. His grandmother was the president of Hadassah – Israel’s Jerusalem Tamar Chapter. Six years ago, after feeling lethargic and suffering from pains in his bones, he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of bone-marrow cancer. He had been treated by five different types of medication at Hadassah, but one by one they stopped working. “I’d read about CAR – T therapy in the United States, but I was beyond thrilled to learn that my own hospital was now offering it”, he says.
He was accepted and admitted for the trial. His own T – cells were extracted, treated to make them deadly and accurate and then multiplied, and put back into his body to vanquish the cancer cells. “The first days were rough – actually a good sign – and the staff knew exactly how to treat me.” He says it wasn’t as hard as chemotherapy or a bone-marrow transplantation, both of which he has undergone. “What Professor Stepensky does is like rocket science”, says mom Elisheva Lahav.
In an ongoing Phase I clinical trial, 85 % of 26 relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma patients on the treatment responded, and 71% had a complete response. The patients had an average of six previous types of treatment that were no longer effective. Lahav-Goldshmid does not yet have long-term results, but his numbers are up and he’s already feeling better. What’s most encouraging? “It’s that at Hadassah they’re never standing still. Every day they’re working to improve yesterday’s treatment. They’re working on my type of cancer, and then she’s going after all the others.”

A note from Lori Heiken

Thank you so much for your generous donation to Hadassah in memory of our mom, Phyllis Small. We will be purchasing a road tile in mom's memory to go in the Mother and Child Pavilion. We hope to be traveling to Israel in the next few years so we can see this.
We certainly appreciate your thoughtfulness and condolences through this difficult time.

With gratitude,
Lori Heiken and the family of Phyllis Small

Gonzalez v Google

Gonzalez v Google: Inside a Modern-Day David v Goliath Case

Hadassah’s Attorneys and Judges Council presents, Gonzalez v Google, LLC., a case of first impression before the Supreme Court on Sunday, March 19, 2023, 2 pm ET/11 am PT/ 8 pm Israeli time. Join us on Zoom! Click here to register.

Fresh from oral argument before the Supreme Court, Keith Altman will bring us his view on this modern day David v Goliath story. Representing the Gonzalez family whose son died as a result of a terrorist attack, Keith Altman argues that YouTube’s algorithms recommended terrorism recruitment videos to users and thus expanded the reach of the Islamic State. Google, LLC is the owner of YouTube. The Gonzalez case has the potential to alter how social media giants provide content to users.

NItsana Darshan-Leitner (invited), attorney founder of Israel Law Center, has been behind this case for 7 years, fighting terror and antisemitism through the legal arena. She brings charges against those responsible for terror attacks and obtains financial compensation for the victims worldwide. Keith Altman argued this case before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. This case was set for oral argument on February 21, 2023.

We are excited that author Hannah Brenner Johnson will Zoom in live with us. Click here to register. Shortlisted follows the paths of 9 extraordinary women who appeared on Presidential short lists for Supreme Court nominations in the decades before Sandra Day O’Connor made history. It fills a notable historical gap and is a fascinating read.
