WELCOME MESSAGE FROM ROBIN SHUMAN, Co-chair WELCOME MESSAGE FROM ROBIN SHUMAN, Co-chair
What a year this has been! We have celebrated many firsts with our colleagues in Israel, amongst them: the humanitarian mission of Hadassah nurses educating Polish colleagues on trauma treatment for victims of war in Ukraine; the midwife hotline set up to offer advice; providing lab coats and guidance for the first White Coat Ceremony for our advanced nursing graduates; presentations of cutting-edge nursing research; and the dedication of the Henrietta Szold Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Nursing’s New Learning Center at the Goldwurm Auditorium.

Reflections from First-Time Visitor Phyllis Garr

Reflections from First-Time Visitor Phyllis Garr
As I walked up the hill in October 2022 to participate in the Hadassah Northeast walk for women's health, my first Hadassah event, I reflected on my favorite theorist, Patricia Benner, who implemented stages of learning in nursing careers as we go from novice to expert. Then in November, I found myself a novice again, as I traveled with Hadassah on my first journey to Israel. I proceeded with my eyes wide open regarding my Jewish heritage. Masada, the Old City, the Western Wall at dawn and dusk in Jerusalem as Shabbat began, the internal connection I felt as I pass by people and smile -- all this impacted me.

A festive dedication of the New Learning Center at the Goldwurm Auditorium at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem took place on November 14, 2022. This project addresses the critical nursing shortage that Israel is experiencing. The Government of Israel has asked and Hadassah has answered by increasing the nursing student class size by 25%. The auditorium has been transformed into a state-of-the-art learning center accommodating 185 students, with upgraded multimedia and integrated technology, full access for all with physical challenges, additional classroom spaces, simulation technology and more. We were treated to a new video, which captured many Nursing milestones of our Henrietta Szold Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Nursing. Watch the full dedication here.

Our Healthcare Heroes -- YOUOur Healthcare Heroes -- YOU
This program was held on May 15, 2022, in commemoration of National Nurses Week and International Nurses Day. The goal was to celebrate all healthcare heroes. The program started off with a video about Hadassah nurses in action in Israel. Nursing leaders from the US and Israel shared their personal nursing stories and talked about what inspires them on a daily basis. Watch the recording of the full program here.

Building the Future of Nursing in IsraelBuilding the Future of Nursing in Israel
Held on September 18, 2022, this program focused on the incredible research being conducted by Hadassah nurses in Israel. The program continued with presentations made by nurse leaders, educators, and researchers from the Henrietta Szold Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Nursing in Israel, to learn about advanced practice nursing in Israel, where it is now and what the future may hold. Watch the recording of the full program here.

Greater Detroit Health Professional Council Program:
"Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation"

This program featured a presentation by Dr. Mari Alschuler, an associate professor of social work at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio. Greater Detroit Hadassah attendees of the stimulating web-based workshop learned about concepts related to gender identity, intersectionality theory, and the importance of names and pronouns. During the presentation, Mari utilized Zoom break out rooms to allow the attendees to create action items for improvement in communication with transgender and binary clients in their practice. Thank you, Mari Alschuler, for an informative evening. If any Hadassah members have ideas for future workshops, please email Debby Orloff at dorloff@twmi.rr.com.
