Presidents Message Logo 2021
Dear Friends,
In the Book of Ecclesiastes there is saying we all recognize: “To everything there is a season”. As we move into June, the season shifts to summer, a time for vacations, reconnecting with family and perhaps spending some lazy days on the beach reading a good book. That is not what is on my mind today having just participated in the Abortion Rights Rally.

Convention 2022 Logo
Join us in Jerusalem: We're thrilled to invite you to join us for Hadassah's 100th National Convention: Together in Israel: Our Pride. Our Purpose. It will take place November 14-17, 2022 (provided health regulations allow). This is our first convention in Israel in a decade and our best lineup yet! Share your Hadassah pride and purpose and leave inspired to continue your support for Hadassah and for Israel.

Are you considering attending this year's National Convention in Israel? Would a subvention to defer some of the expense help make your decision a reality? If so, this is what would be required:

• Attend all the National Convention sessions including the breakout sessions I select with my registration.

• Write and submit an article or bulletin to the Region President about one of the sessions and/or speak at a Chapter event or Region Board Meeting or Workshop.

• Step up to a leadership portfolio in your Chapter or Region. This may include, but is not limited to, chairing or co-chairing an event, accepting a board portfolio, or another commitment agreed upon by my Region/Chapter President and myself.

Click here for the Convention Subvention Contract that you may use to request a subvention to attend the National Convention. The completed form should be sent, as soon as possible, to bprager@hadassah.org.

On the eve of June 4th and continuing to the 5th and 6th, Jews will celebrate the holiday of Shavuot. It is one of the three pilgrimage festivals; the other two are Passover and Sukkot. They were commemorated by Jews making a pilgrimage to the holy temple where they would bring a sacrifice. Shavuot is known by several names. One is Hag Ha Bikkorim, festival of the first fruits, when the sacrifice would be the first fruits of the harvest. Another is Hag Ha Katzir, festival of the harvest. Another is the festival of the giving of the Torah at Sinai.

Shavuot is connected to Passover as on the second day we begin counting 50 days to Shavuot. During this period we count each day, counting the omer. While there is no temple to which to bring an omer (a sheaf of grain) and most Jews are not involved with agriculture, the rabbis said we should still count the omer from Passover to Shavuot, marking each day as it brings us closer to the receiving the Torah and farther away from the days of our enslavement.

The rabbis, including Maimonides, said that the counting is directly from the Torah. It is customary to light candles on each night ending in, "ner shel yom tov". It is also a tradition to study on the first night until dawn, (if you can stay awake that long). This is to recall that the people prepared for the next day in which they would receive the Torah. The counting and the studying helps us to focus on this seminal event in our history.

Little Known Jewish Women Logo
Rosalind Franklin was born in 1920 to Ellis and Muriel Franklin, both members of education and socially conscious Jewish families that arrived in England during the 1700s and 1800s. She had such a strong independent streak that she would argue with the politically conservative father. She was interested in drawing, photography, and reading as well as sports. She used her talent as an artist and machinist to first sketch and then build her own molecular models and equipment. She was expected, however, to focus her talents on political, educational and charitable forms community service. It was fairly unusual that early in her life, she became fascinated with physics and chemistry at the rigorous St. Paul’s Girls School and even more unusual that she earned a natural sciences degree with a specialty in chemistry at Cambridge in 1941. Rosalind’s final degree exams qualified her for a graduate research scholarship, but she did not interact with her supervisor who stated to Rosalind’s biographer, Anne Sayre that he did not approve of her interest in “raising the status of her sex to equality of men.”
