February is the month during which we celebrate the birthdays of two Presidents; George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Both have been friends of the Jewish people.
Washington had visited the Jewish community in Newport, Rhode Island and wrote a letter praising the participation of the Jews in the new nation. This letter, now housed in the Touro Synagogue, synagogue stands out, although many letters were sent to other congregations. The letter is in response to a letter sent to him by Moses Seixas, then called a warden of the community which had just received the arrival of several Sephardic Jews. Seixas was seeking assurance for religious freedom for Jews in this new nation. Washington's letter to Seixas stated, "May the children of the stock of Abraham who dwell in this land continue to merit and enjoy good will of the inhabitants. Washington went on to quote the prophet Micah, "While everyone shall sit in safety under his own vine and fig tree and there shall be no one to make him afraid". Let it be so.
Abraham Lincoln, our sixteenth president, holds a special place in the hearts of many Jews. General Grant, of civil war fame, gave the infamous order to expel Jewish traders from several states. President Lincoln reversed this order known as number 11. Lincoln also was the first president to enable rabbis to serve as chaplains in the Union Army. Lincoln is perceived to be a great humanitarian who helped free the slaves, just as Jews in Ancient Israel had been freed from slavery.

January 21st marked the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Yet now, nearly five decades later, we can't be sure that ruling — and its protections — will survive the year ahead. Affirming that "we're proud to come together as a powerful Hadassah force for women," Hadassah President Rhoda Smolow and CEO Naomi Adler write about why we need to act now to support the Women's Health Protection Act. Join us in taking action for reproductive rights.
