Presidents Message Logo 2021
As we move into June, the season shifts to summer, a time for vacations, reconnecting with family and perhaps spending some lazy days on the beach reading a good book. It’s also a good time to read about Hadassah’s accomplishments and projects for the future.HMO Delegation Travels to Argentina: Did you know that in early May the Hadassah Medical Organization sent a delegation to Argentina to provide critical knowledge and experience to frontline medical professionals in the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hadassah News Logo
Hadassah has been working tirelessly and has been featured in many prominent new articles. Click the links below to read.

From NBC News: "We're incredibly grateful that the president is using his bully pulpit," said Janice Weinman, CEO of Hadassah. "But there are concrete actions that he can take now, and those would be a powerful step to combat antisemitism." Click here to read the article

The Washington Post wrote about the letter we sent to President Joe Biden at The White House about the dramatic rise in antisemitism -- along with AJC - American Jewish Committee, ADL - Anti-Defamation League, Jewish Federations of North America and the Orthodox Union. From The Jerusalem Post: “We are here, all together, Jews and Arabs, of all religions, working, showing up for every medical emergency and leaving everything behind to take care of the sick,” Dr. Salameh-Youssef told The Jerusalem Post / JPost.com. “We can be a light, a candle shining in the darkness.” Click here to read the article

Israeli to Arab Transplant
Kidney from Jew killed in mob violence goes to Arab woman
Randa Aweis, 58, waited nine years for the organ donation that would change her life. An Arab Christian, born in the Old City of Jerusalem, she was relying on regular dialysis sessions as her kidneys failed. Then the call came: A donor kidney was available. Aweis had surgery Monday at Jerusalem's famed Hadassah University Hospital Ein Kerem. When she went under the anaesthetic, she did not know who the donor was.

As the situation in Israel continues to escalate, there is an urgent, growing need to support HMO during this emergency as we continue to rely upon our doctors, nurses and staff to — once again — risk their lives while working harder and longer.
Please support Hadassah and HMO during this crucial time. Please help us heal Israel.

Hadassah Machon Logo 2021

We would love to hear from you……
Machon is a Region study group meets on the first Sunday morning of the month from October thru May 9:30 -11AM, by Zoom or in person, to be decided at a later date. It is open to all Hadassah members and prospective members.

The group delves into one issue or topic during these sessions, which are interactive and stimulating. We are contemplating the upcoming year’s topic and one possible area is the study of Jewish Music Through the Ages. We are thinking of the following categories plus any others that you might suggest: Classical; Israeli; Klezmer; Liturgy; New Jewish Music; Sephardic and Babylonian; Suppressed; Yiddish; American Jewish Composers and their influence; Jewish influences on Broadway etc.

Of course, these are only suggestions and we realize that in order to create a program of this nature, we need your input. Do you have music that exemplifies the various genres that you could share with us? Will you facilitate one monthly session on one topic? Do you know any musicians that can chat with us on the monthly topic? Are you a Jewish musical devote? What books, records and music would you suggest to increase our knowledge and understanding of these topics?

Please contact me, Fran Sachs at sachstwo@aol.com or (561) 756-0864 to share your thoughts. I look forward to hearing from you. Please respond by July 15th.

Little Known Jewish Women Logo
I decided to deviate from the usual format of this column after reading an article on the ARTS page of the January 25 issue of the New York Times.
The headline reads, “THEY ARE NOMINEES, HEAR THEM ROAR”. (Has the editor of the New York Times been reading my column in the Hadassah Bulletin?) The article states that, eight out of ten actresses who are nominated for academy awards are over forty and almost none play a character you would want to cross.”

Lets Stay Connected Graphic

All of us at Hadassah have been focused on the devastating crisis in Israel. Recent news of a ceasefire brings us hope, and our hearts are with friends, family and colleagues there — and with all the people of Israel. Hadassah@home is here with updates from Israel, as well as actions you can take from home. As you'll see in a video report below, Hadassah's hospitals were essential during this crisis, treating patients of all religions, ethnicities and backgrounds in need of care — a model of building bridges to peace that is central to our mission. Read our latest talking points about the crisis in Israel.
You'll also find other ways you can connect with your Hadassah community, always a source of comfort in difficult times.

Hadassah crisis update: Recorded live for Hadassah on May 14, Israel in Crisis: An Update on Operation Guardian of the Walls features Hadassah National President Rhoda Smolow in conversation with Barbara Sofer, Director of Public Relations, Hadassah Office in Israel, about life in Israel over the past week and the vital role that Hadassah's hospitals played in treating the injured.

Urge Congress to support Israel: Our hearts are with Israel, but we need the power of our voices as well. It is up to us to defend Israel and its people in this time of need. Speak out now. Tell your elected leaders that Americans stand with Israel and thank them for providing Israel with the support it needs to defend itself.

Hadassah book club: Celebrate the first anniversary of One Book, One Hadassah with a live interview with Rachel Beanland, author of Florence Adler Swims Forever. Touted as "the perfect summer read" by USA Today, the story, set in 1930s Atlantic City, begins with a shocking tragedy that results in three generations of the Adler family grappling with heartbreak, romance and the weight of family secrets. The book is the winner of the 2020 National Jewish Book Award's Goldberg Prize, which honors a debut work of fiction each year. Thursday, June 10, 7 pm ET.
