As breast cancer is on my mind these days, I looked at Hadassah’s website to see what new advances they are making. As usual, I was not disappointed. Hadassah and HMO are amazing organizations and always at the forefront for medical care and research. Hadassah uses 3 proven strategies to fight breast cancer:

Education & awareness
Domestic advocacy
Support for groundbreaking research at the HMO

Some interesting facts:

-       Among women in the U.S., breast cancer is the 2nd most deadly cancer, causing 40,000 deaths each year in America.

-       Breast cancer is the #2 cause of cancer deaths in women after lung disease.

-       252,000 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the U.S. per year.

-       Ashkenazi Jews are 10x more likely to have a BRCA Gene Mutation.

 HMO Research:
Professor Tamar Peretz (Head of Hadassah’s Sharett Institute of Oncology focuses on:

-       Role inherited traits play in developing breast cancer.

-       The specific biology of each tumor to better tailor therapy.

-       Diagnosing cancer through blood samples rather than invasive biopsies.

-       Researchers have pioneered a way to prevent transmission of the BRCA mutation to the next generation, through in vitro fertilization and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) which enables women who carry the mutation to have their embryos pre-screened.

 Future Steps:
-       Examining Tumor DNA before and after treatment will help researchers with effective treatment protocols and whether alternate treatment is needed.

-       Studying DNA in aggressive breast tumors could lead to another prediction marker signaling the presence of cancer.

L.E.A. members can take part in helping the impressive Hadassah research of the present, which benefits not only us, but future generations of women going through breast cancer. However you choose to help is appreciated, whether with donations, active on the Board, making phone calls or advocacy. We can and will make a difference!

 B’Shalom,

Barbara

March 6-7 is Hadassah Shabbat

The Shabbat before Purim, holds particular importance as Purim marks the founding of Hadassah. The Hebrew name of Esther, the Purim megillat’s heroine, is Hadassah’s namesake. Shabbat Zachor and the story of Purim remind us how evil can be transformed into good, focusing on the victory over oppression and discrimination. Let's celebrate Hadassah's 108th anniversary!  Hadassah members from the L.E.A. and Denver Chapters will be speaking at area synagogues bringing Hadassah's message of passion for Israel, advocacy, and health and medical research to the pews and social halls.
