COMING UP- OUR 64TH YEAR- ANNUAL MEDICAL CENTER PARTY FUNDRAISER, JUNE 18
Did You Know? --- The Medical Center Party is Rochester Hadassah's longest ongoing fundraiser. More money is raised from this initiative than all our other projects!
How Is The Money Used? --- All proceeds are directed to our Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) in Israel for patient care, research, and training. --- The Hadassah Medical Organization treats over 1 million patients a year, regardless of race, religion, or nationality. --- Hadassah leads the way with advancements in ALS, breast and colon cancers, trauma and emergency medicine, diabetes, macular degeneration, MS, AIDS, Parkinson's disease, neuroscience, melanoma and cardiac health. --- Hadassah created world renown research programs, such as the Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research Center, regarded to be one of the most advanced in the world. --- Hadassah builds bridges to peace in the Middle East by providing world class medical care and training to Christians and Arabs. --- Hadassah responds to international crises. Hadassah provided healing and caring in Haiti, Darfur, Kenya, Ethiopia, Thailand and the Philippines in times of need. --- In 2017, our Medical Center Party proceeds were used to purchase a patient room in the new Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower. Our name is on the door! --- Last year's proceeds benefited the Pediatric area of our Ein Kerem Hospital.
How Can I Participate? --- Buy a Medical Center Party “ticket”. It's really a raffle ticket, but we have to call it that to maintain our not-for-profit status. --- You can buy a partial ticket – 1/3 for $60, half for $90 or an entire ticket for $180 . --- Your name is submitted and you may be a big winner of $$$$$ prizes at our event – $1200, $900, $600, or $450 at the Medical Center Party on June 18th. --- You don't have to be there to win – BUT you have to be in it to win it!
What Happens at the Medical Center Party? --- Good food, good friends, entertainment, door prizes, lots of fun and the possibility of winning $$$ -- A Win/Win evening. You win (see above) and Hadassah wins - for sure!

MITZVAH PROJECT UPDATE
Our Mitzvah Makers Visited School 3 third graders
“To the Hadassah Group – Thank you for all the school supplies. I don't have that much stuff – so thank you very much.” From Zhamir
“Thank you for the stuff – and why it is important to give us stuff – and you are the best because you did a good thing." From Adra
“Thank you that you help my class – it is important to me. I hope you have a good day. “ Love Phillyona
“I love you for life! “ - Maqai
We received thank you cards with pictures, hearts and I love yous for all the supplies Hadassah members donated to the 3rd graders in Ms. Berntsen's class and to the other students at Rochester School #3 on Adams Street. And our Hadassah Mitzvah Makers got hugs, lots of thank yous and endless smiles when we spent a morning with these wonderful students.
Linda Rapkin provided another teaching moment, an important educational component to our session. The kids made their own fleece scarves, decorated and ate cookies, made Cheerios bird feeders and pine cone owls. They learned about how birds survive Rochester winters and listened to books about birds. All the students also received gloves and hand knit hats to go along with their new scarves.
A huge thank you to our Team: Linda Rapkin, Dorothy Appel, Martha Green, Emily Fishman, Lori Friedman, Wendy Scull, Ron & Karen Newman – AND many thanks to all who donate supplies and reading books. Most of our Rochester teachers spend hundreds of their own money to insure their students have the tools needed for classroom learning and work. You help provide those tools and the kids and teachers are very grateful. A special Thank You to Joan Shulman for her extra generous donation for literacy help at School 3.

HADASSAH STATEMENT ON THE SAN DIEGO CHABAD SHOOTING
Hadassah, The Women's Zionist Organization of America, Inc.(HWZOA) is devastated by the Saturday morning shooting at the Chabad of Poway, in San Diego County, and te recent targeting of other houses of worship in America and around the world.
We mourn, with the worldwide community, the tragic loss of one of our
Hadassah sisters, Lori Gilbert-Kaye z”l, a beloved member of the Bat
Harim group of Hadassah San Diego, who was fatally shot, while trying to
save the rabbi, during morning services. Three others were wounded,
including a child and Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein.
Learning that the woman who died in the horrendous shooting in San
Diego was a Hadassah member doesn’t make this despicable act worse, but
it does bring it closer to home. We are an organization that truly
cares about its members, leaders, Associates, and supporters -- but we
also care about our communities and when one of us suffers, we all
suffer.
Our deepest condolences go out to the Gilbert and Kaye families and
to all those who are grieving. May those injured have full and speedy
recoveries. Although physical wounds heal within a timely manner,
emotional ones take that much longer. I pray we are truly a support
system for those who will need us to help them through this most
difficult time.
Our thoughts are with those who have been affected by this tragedy,
especially our members in the San Diego and Southern California area,
and we express gratitude to an off-duty officer and San Diego's “first
responders,” who were successful in capturing the gunman.
This shooting comes six months to the day after 11 people were killed
in a shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. According
to a report by the ADL, anti-Semitic incidents and attacks have risen by
60% in the United States in the last year alone. This shocking
escalation in hate both at home and abroad requires swift and broad
action by our local, state and national leaders.
Hadassah members have a part to play by advocating for our policy priorities including the Never Again Education Act;
a bill that would expand Holocaust Education and anti-hate curricula in
the schools. As members of Hadassah, we must reaffirm our commitment to
fighting anti-Semitism and hate wherever they are present.
When one life is taken, all our lives are affected, and we stand
united in common grief and a conviction to make the world a better
place. May we go from strength to strength.
May the memory of Lori Gilbert-Kaye z”l serve as a blessing to all
who knew her and as inspiration to all who only knew of her.
B’Shalom,
Ellen Hershkin

THE FIRST EVER VEIN TRANSPLANT SAVES MAN'S LEG FROM AMPUTATION!
Avi Yavetz of Modi'in might have faced a fate common to patients with
peripheral vascular disease: the amputation of his leg. But luckily for
Yavetz, Prof. Ron Carmeli, Director of Vascular Surgery at Hadassah
Hospital, had "a crazy idea to check if someone
in his family would be willing to donate a vein."
Yavetz's four children were willing. As it turned out, his son Snir was a
suitable match, with an appropriate vein that extended from his foot to
groin. Two weeks after the successful transplant, performed at
Hadassah's Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower,
father and son are doing well. "I am sure this breakthrough will save
many others in the future," said Prof. Carmeli. Read
their story.
