ANNUAL CAMPAIGN - ILLUMINATE YOUR SOUL!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDIUM

medp.jpg

This year the first day of Chanukah is December 13th and we will once again celebrate a well-known miracle. We all learned in Hebrew School about the oil which was only enough for 1 day, but lasted 8 days until more holy oil could be produced. This is a perfect metaphor for Hadassah. We do more with less. We are called upon to perform medical miracles on a daily basis. The teachers and staff of our Youth Aliyah Villages produce a miraculous transformation on the young people in their care. Hadassah has been making miracles happen for almost 106 years. Your donations may seem small to you, but Hadassah manages to magnify your dollars by careful use. We urge you to consider giving to our annual campaign before the end of the tax year. You will be helping Hadassah perform miracles.

Sunday, December 10th is our Chanukah celebration; Latkes, Lunch and Hadassah Trivia. We hope to see all of you there to celebrate the end of our Hadassah year and look forward to the beginnings of a new and successful year.

Chanukah Sameach,

Fran, Marcia, Monika & Tammi

(last year's P.A.D. Party)

Government programs like SNAP or food stamps don't provide for feminine hygiene products. Many underserved women and girls regularly miss work and school during their menstrual cycle. They can't afford tampons and pads. In response to this need, the National Council of Jewish Women's local section developed the P.A.D. project, which stands for Providing Access and Dignity to women and girls during their monthly cycle.

On January 17th, we'll assemble personal hygiene kits for women and girls in shelters, refugee centers, city schools, the Center for Youth Services and other organizations .

Please join us at Temple Sinai, 363 Penfield Road and begin gathering personal hygiene products to donate for our kits Use those newspaper coupons and shop at discount stores. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Can't come? Your donations are most welcome. Details to follow in January. Contact Monika Katzel (203-1200 , or lesterkatzel@earthlink.net )for more information or donations.

Did you know Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was given a lifetime achievement award this November from the Genesis Prize Foundation? Did you know she's a Hadassah Life Member? It's true. Justice Ginsburg was given the award, according to the Foundation, in honor of her "groundbreaking legal work in the field of civil liberties and women's rights." She's pictured here in 2016 at the Supreme Court after swearing in members of the Hadassah Attorneys Council.

YOUTH ALIYAH/CHILDREN AT RISK

Avata’s Journey to Ethiopia, Poland and Home

Avata came to Meir Shfeyah almost 3 years ago in the 10th grade. After leaving home in Tel Aviv and not going to school for more than a year, he decided to change his life and get an education. He was referred to Hadassah Meir Shfeyah Youth Village where he is finishing the 12th grade and graduating in June. He is now in the midst of his semester preparing for Bagrat {matriculation} exams and hoping to be in the military unit in the IDF after he graduates.

He was chosen to go to Ethiopia with the first Shfeyah delegation to Ethiopia. For several months before and after the journey, the members of the delegation volunteered weekly in an after school program for young Ethiopian children in Hadra.  The week long journey was funded by Hadassah.

Avata was again chosen to participate in Shfeyah’s delegation to the Hadassah Mission to Poland. He was deeply moved by what he learned during the 6th month preparation before the trip and what he experienced in Poland.  He felt that the trip to Poland strengthened his resolve to defend his country and serve in the IDF.

We can help the students and the many others in the Youth Villages by purchasing Youth Aliyah Certificates which are good for any occasion. Small Certificates are $5 and up plus postage.  Large Certificates are $15 and up plus postage. Contact Marlene Elkin, 271-1871.

DEFINING ZIONISM:  A ZIONESS TAKES ON ZIONISM

amanda-berman-tile.jpg

For civil rights attorney Amanda Berman, co-founder of the Zioness Movement, now is the moment for Zionists to confront anti-Zionist sentiments in the progressive movement. In these Defining Zionism clips, she expands on Zioness, why she believes too many potential social justice activists are staying home instead of participating in progressive causes, and how she hopes to grow and work with progressive leaders to increase participation of Zionists in the push for social justice.
