Rochester Hadassah Joins Temple Sinai Women's Chavurah in Presenting:
Heroes and Villains: An Interactive History of Medicine in America
Wednesday, November 28, 7:00 PM, Temple Sinai

                                                                      seeking.jpg

Riots, deception, legitimate and illegitimate science, aristocratic villains and drug addicted heroes...who knew these were all part of the evolution of medicine as we know it in the USA? Marilyn Rosen, Hadassah ebulletin editor, storyteller and retired Biomedical Information Specialist at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry Library, has transformed the book SEEKING THE CURE: THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE IN AMERICA by Ira Rutkow into a storytelling experience that depends on audience involvement.  Participants need only bring their voice, their imagination, and their enthusiasm!  This program was last performed at the Rochester 2016 Fringe Festival.

You are invited to come join the fun!

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDIUM

medpresidents.jpg

Dear Hadassah friends,

It’s November, bringing the return to Standard Time, which can remind us about turning points in time when your world and everyone else’s spins off in a new direction. For instance: the day you met/married your spouse, the day your child was born, the 11th of September 2001 when the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were attacked, etc. But all Jews should always remember one pivotal date 70 years ago.

On November 29, 1947, the UN General Assembly passed Resolution 181, calling for Partition of the British-ruled mandate of Palestine into the Jewish State and the Arab State. 33 countries cast a “Yes” vote, 10 Muslim countries plus Greece, predictably voted “No”, an additional 10 abstained.

We are all aware that the vote to pass Resolution 181 by no means settled the matter peacefully or conclusively. The State of Israel had to fight for its existence because her Arab neighbors refused to accept the UN’s decision. What does this have to do with Hadassah? Everything! We established the healthcare system of Israel when it was still part of the Ottoman Empire, nurtured its clinics, hospitals, and youth rescue villages through the British Mandate, and saw to it that the modern State of Israel would be born with necessary infrastructure. Hadassah was prepared for November 29, 1947.

As you set your clocks back Sunday night, November 5th, we ask you to think about that pivotal moment in time on November 29, 1947 when it all began for the State of Israel. We ask you to continue your efforts for Hadassah and Israel.

We are in the midst of planning for Hadassah- Rochester’s 2018 year.  We need you, our members, to help make our programs run.  If you are interested in working on a program please contact us and we can discuss on which of our programs you might be interested in working.  Please print out the interest survey and return it to one of us.  We want to know where your interests lie so that we may better serve the chapter as a whole.

Let’s keep them both moving forward b’yachad, together!

B’Shalom,

Fran, Marcia, Monika & Tammi

YOUTH ALIYAH/CHILDREN AT RISK

Yaron grew up in an extremely religious family in Safed, but in the 10th grade he decided he no longer believed. The eldest of  eight children, he became a negative role model in the eyes of his parents and neighborhood.  His parents didn't reject him.  With the help of a social worker, they arranged for him to move to Meir Shfeyah.  "He's our son," said his mother.
"When he first came, like all adolescents, he tested his boundaries," said village psychologist Maayan Burstein.  "He asked for a foster family, but they turned him down.  He has to make peace with his own family.  Since Shabbat had become a point of conflict with his family, we had invited him to stay in the village for Shabbat.  It's quiet and nice here then. He studied in a Yeshiva, where basic subjects weren't covered.  He had to redo a grade.  He is working in the cow shed which he loves. I go with him to visit his parents, and they talk about their love for each other and what they share.  His living away from home and getting help takes away stress in the family.  They can recognize their differences and remain close.  We see healing within the family as a major goal,"  says Burstein.
Meir Shfeyah is located  the Carmel Mountains near Zacharon Yaacov. Our Youth Aliyah program sets at risk children in Israel on a  path for a successful future.  Since 1934, 0ver 300,000 young people from 80 lands have graduated from Youth Aliyah.

We can help the students and the many others in the Youth Villages by purchasing Youth Aliyah Certificates which are good for any occasion. Small Certificates are $5 and up plus postage.  Large Certificates are $15 and up plus postage. Contact Marlene Elkin, 271-1871.
