PRESIDIUM MESSAGE
Dear Hadassah Friends,
The National Hadassah’s Business
Meeting & Symposium in St Louis has come and gone. I was privileged
to represent each of you at the meetings. During the HMO (Hadassah
Medical Organization) session, the delegates and I were treated to a
spellbinding story told by Ilana Weismark. Ilana and Adee met and
married in Jerusalem. Her pregnancy was uneventful. After they arrived
at Hadassah Ein Kerem, there were bleeding complications and Ilana was
induced. Their infant daughter was crowning, but midwife Jamila saw
signs of an emergency when Ilana fainted. Some of her amniotic fluid had
leaked into her bloodstream and the embolism had gone to her lungs. She
ceased breathing and began to bleed from every orifice. Baby Kinneret
was delivered, but with an Apgar score of 0 out of 10. At 8 lbs 11 oz.
Kinneret was quickly revived and appeared fine, but Ilana was worse. For
4 ½ minutes, she was clinically dead.
Doctors worked on Ilana
for 7 hours and put her into a medically induced coma. After 48 hours,
Ilana’s vitals climbed. But, the staff wondered, would her health
survive? With no recollection of being pregnant, Ilana said, “I was able
to speak in French to my parents, in English to Adee, and yell at the
nurses in Hebrew!” In a few more days, Ilana was able to nurse Kinneret
and return home. Owing to the skill of her labor and delivery team,
Ilana’s womb was saved and she would go on to have two more successful
pregnancies.
How big a miracle was Ilana Weismark’s survival? 2.5
in 100,000 women suffer an amniotic embolism. 65% of infants die in the
womb. 80% of mothers do not survive.
“I am the poster child for
Ein Kerem’s Labor and Delivery Department. If it weren’t for Ein Kerem
and their staff, I wouldn’t be here.” High risk pregnancies are the
ultimate test of knowledge and skill. In the coming months you will hear
about the launch of the Campus Campaign for Ein Kerem, and the
beginning project to renovate the “round building” at Ein Kerem, which
will house high risk pregnancy services.
Remember Ilana, Adee
and Kinneret’s miracle story and tell your friends how important it is
to support the hospital that made their lives possible. Each of you,
donating your time and your dollars to Hadassah make this miracle, and
others, happen. I thank you and the families we help thank you.
with gratitude, Marcia

ROCHESTER HADASSAH SCHOOL MITZVAH PROJECT
Rochester Hadassah School Mitzvah Project
In another
month, it's back to school for our area students, ready to work and
learn. Unfortunately, many will come lacking the tools necessary for
classroom participation. WE CAN HELP – by buying school supplies for
the kids at Rochester School #3. Use those August back-to-school
coupons to purchase paper, folders, notebooks, pencils, markers,
backpacks and art supplies (new please). New or gently used pleasure
reading books are always appreciated for any grade level.
Bring
your donations to Hadassah meetings, to me, or call for a pickup. Many
Rochester city teachers spend hundreds of their own money each year to
make sure their students have necessary supplies. The students and
faculty are so grateful for all your gifts, that allow the kids to be
prepared for this school year.

Call him Boris. He knows violence close up. His alcoholic
father beat him, his sister and their mother. Then he abandoned them, taking
all their money. His mother's new boyfriend was also violent and is often
incarcerated. Boris's mother had a new baby. To complicate matters Boris
and his older sister suffer from childhood diabetes. His sister managed to keep
hers in control, but Boris requires frequent hospitalization.
The welfare department found no food in the home and took
Boris and his older sister out of the home. His sister went to Meir Shfeyah
Youth Village, where she is thriving. Boris went to a home for younger children, but begged as he approached 13 to be together with his sister.
"
He is such a charming and bright boy that you can't help being charmed by
him", said Maayan Burstein, the psychologist at Meir Shfeyah.
However despite his joy at being with his sister in the first months of
school, he has been hospitalized five times ; these health crises bring him
attention but are very dangerous. We have to find other ways for him to
receive the positive attention he deserves.
" Social Services want to move him to a smaller environment but he wants to stay here.
His sister wants him to stay here and his mother wants him to stay. Even his
biological father turned up and wants him to stay. We and his fellow students
want him to stay too. We don't want to give up on him. Now he has constant
contact with the nurse and the campus health clinic. We are fighting for him.
Wait and see. We're going to win!" says Burstein.
You can help these children in the Youth Aliyah Villages by purchasing Youth Aliyah
Certificates which are good for any occasion:
Small Certificates are
$5 and up plus postage. Large Certificates are $15 and up plus postage.
