PRESIDIUM MESSAGE
It seems like the whole world has gone digital…. email, internet, Facebook,
Twitter, online newspapers and YouTube. Hadassah is no different. Have you
checked out the Hadassah website lately… www.hadassah.org? What about Hadassah
Magazine online… www.hadassahmagazine.org, with the articles from the print
magazine and more? Have you liked the Hadassah Facebook page? And don’t forget
our own website athttp://www.Hadassah.org/rochester .
The current website includes articles about Bassem Eid, a
Jerusalem-based Palestinian peace advocate, political analyst and human rights
pioneer, talking about Zionism; A Jewish Nurse and a Palestinian Baby – about a
Hadassah Hospital nurse taking it upon herself to breastfeed a Palestinian baby
who would not take a bottle and whose mother was in intensive care due to the
car accident that injured them both, and who recruited others to help out;
videos from the Women’s Health Empowerment Summit in May; and so much more.
Hadassah Magazine, in print and online, remembered the Six Day War in the
May issue. On a personal note, I was honored to have my short piece included in
the online edition and would like to share it with all of you: "I was 10 years old. We had just celebrated my
grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary the prior weekend. My great aunt and
uncle were still visiting. I was at home, just waking up and getting ready for
school. My mom was screaming, “Israel is at war.” The next day, watching the
evening news reports showing the reunification of Jerusalem, brought tears of
joy to my eyes. Even though I was young, it is forever a part of me. Even
today, when I see photographs and films of the soldiers entering the Old City
and praying at the Kotel, that feeling returns—chills throughout my body, tears
in my eyes and pure joy.”
You can sign up for the Netletter by Barbara
Sofer, our PR director at the Hadassah Office in Israel by sending a blank
email to Netletter-on@mail-list.com, where she writes about the goings on at
Hadassah and in Israel. And be sure to check out her articles in the Jerusalem
Post – the latest entitled “The Human Spirit – Take Grandma to see Wonder
Woman.”
Take a few
minutes to search online, sign up, and educate yourself on all that is going
on. There is a wealth of information and articles about Hadassah, anti-semitism,
the BDS movement– boycotts, divestments and sanctions, Israel and all the innovations, and so much more. Much of it will make you proud
to be a member of Hadassah.
Wishing
you a wonderful and enjoyable summer. Remember to join us at our new fundraiser,
a wine tasting with The Bordeaux Baritone, on Sunday, August 6th. Spouses,
partners and friends (over 21!) welcome. And watch for an update in next
month’s bulletin on the National Board Meetings and the National Business
meeting. I will be representing you at both and will be sharing what will be in
Hadassah’s future.

AND THE WINNERS ARE!! - MEDICAL CENTER PARTY UPDATE
Over our 103 year history, the Rochester Chapter has been a highly successful Hadassah unit, raising
funds for our projects in Israel and our youth camps in the US,
strengthening Jewish identity, educating our members and developing
leadership skills to benefit our women and young people.
A
shining STAR in Rochester fundraising is the Medical Center Party
initiative. For over 60 years, this popular annual project has raised
OVER 1 MILLION DOLLARS to sustain our Medical Center and bring
exceptional, compassionate health care to all who enter our hospitals.
This year, our income will allow us to purchase a patient room in the
new Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower. A plaque by the room's entry way will
acknowledge Rochester's gift.
A HUGE THANK YOU goes out
to all who support this program. Your participation insures that the
work and vision of Hadassah continue!

UPDATE: PROTECT WOMEN'S HEALTH COVERAGE!
The Senate released its version
of new health care legislation, which is very similar to the American
Health Care Act passed by the House on May 4. While the Senate version
does not allow states to waive pre-existing condition requirements, it
does include state waivers for other essential health benefits –
including maternity care.
A Senate vote is now expected to take place before the August recess, and additional changes to the bill are likely. Call your Senators or send a message urging them to protect women’s health coverage.
Hadassah continues to stand with the
list of bipartisan legislators and non-partisan organizations speaking
out about how the American Health Care Act would jeopardize women's
health and the health of all Americans.
Hadassah has long supported
women’s health equity, affordability, and health care access. Free and
low cost preventive health services – including well-woman visits, pap
smears, mammograms, contraception, and nutrition counseling – promote
early detection and save lives. Defunding the preventive care provided
by Planned Parenthood* clinics will leave countless women without access
to these lifesaving wellness and early detection services. We must empower women with knowledge to make appropriate and informed medical decisions for themselves and their families.
Any new health care reform measures
must ensure that women are not charged more or denied coverage because
of gender, that all have equal access to maternity coverage, and that
pregnancy is never be classified as a preexisting condition.
Additionally, we cannot allow millions
of Americans to lose access to or experience interruptions in care,
whether they receive coverage through state and federal healthcare
marketplaces, Medicare, Medicaid, or their employer.
All provisions and deficiencies under
the current health care laws should be addressed through comprehensive
bipartisan negotiations. Urge your Senators, and all your
elected officials, to protect women’s health and work toward a quality,
affordable, and equitable health care system for all.

Competing against 3,000 other students, Ayal
Gudereister, Gal Orbach, and Tor Hadas of Hadassah's Meir Shfeyah Youth

encourages original thinking, team work and time management - essential skills in the high tech and cyber world. The competition involved
each team writing code that competed with codes written by other groups. With the supervision of Shefyah Computer
Coordinator Orit
Cooperman and an advisor from Microsoft, the students developed original
gaming programming. The
ceremony took place in Helon where the winners were
presented with prizes in the presence of the Minister of Education,
Naftali Bennett.

UPDATE ON THE KOTEL/WESTERN WALL SITUATION
National
President Ellen Hershkin and PRAZE Division Coordinator Judy Shereck
are currently in Israel attending the Board of Governors of the Jewish
Agency summer meetings.
Given the June 25th announcement to halt construction of an egalitarian prayer space at the Kotel, the planned meeting’s agenda changed course
to quickly address this situation, as well as a decision by the Israeli government to recognize conversions only under the supervision of the Orthodox Chief
Rabbinate. Click here to read the minutes of the Jewish
Agency Board of Directors Meetings June 25-27, 2017. Click here
to read National President Ellen Hershkin’s letter to the National Assembly with her views on the matter. For updates, please make sure you have signed
up for these advocacy emails, as future correspondence will include an action.
