PRESIDIUM MESSAGE
During these tumultuous times, many of us are concerned with
assaults against the freedom of speech, assembly, press, religion, separation
of Church and State, racial and women's equality, justice and basic human
dignity for all who enter, live, and work in this country.
All of us want
to earn enough to sustain our families.
All of us want to be free from fear.
All of us want access to good health care and reasonable
insurance coverage.
All of us want a high standard of education for our children.
Frustrated by daily affronts to decency, all of us must take
a stand, speak out, and act against bigotry, Anti-Semitism, racism, hatred in
speech and action, and injustice of all kind.
On January 21st, hundreds of thousands marched
for freedom and justice in Washington, in cities around the US and across the
globe.
Hadassah supports the values underlying these protests.
Hadassah women have been involved and engaged from our
earliest days.
Align yourself with the Hadassah moral and ethical compass.
Learn and become aware of Hadassah's active policy
priorities and advocacy work.

IN MEMORIAM
We note with sorrow the passing of: Life Members Mildred Miller and Florence Wecksler. We note the passing of Dr. Albert Simon, husband of Rita Simon, a Life Member, and Maurice Isner, husband of Marcia Isner, also a Life Member. We note with sorrow the passing of National Hadassah Past President Deborah B. Kaplan, at the age of 91."...Debbie was a passionate Zionist who played an instrumental role in
advancing Hadassah's mission, starting from her days as a Young Judaean.
The impact and legacy she leaves behind will serve as inspiration for
generations to come, as those she mentored grow
into our future leadership. It seems fitting that in the years ahead,
Debbie's yarhzeit will fall on the same day as Hadassah founder
Henrietta Szold's..." from Ellen Hershkin, National President May their memories be for a blessing. If you would like to make a donation to Hadassah in anyone's memory, please send a check in any amount to:Toby Berke, 119 Daley Blvd, Rochester, NY 14617
♥ FACT: A woman is 10 times more likely to die from heart disease than from breast cancer.
♥ FACT: Today, in the US, 42% of women who have heart attacks die within one year
(vs. 24% of men).
When it comes to women's heart disease, the statistics are unacceptable.
That's why Hadassah is working to change the status quo for women.
We're making real headway.
Every day, researchers at Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) are making
amazing advances in cardiac research, including at HMO's Linda Joy
Pollin Cardiovascular Wellness Center for Women:
Identifying genetic markers of heart conditions to aid early diagnosis and treatment.
Proving heart cells can regenerate following a heart attack with implanted adult stem cells.
Deepening our understanding of the ways heart disease and heart attacks present differently in women.

YOUTH ALIYAH/CHILDREN AT RISK
Almost from it's inception, Youth Aliyah has received significant
support from Hadassah. The three villages sponsored by Hadassah: Meir
Shfeyah,Ramat Hadassah Szold and Hadassah Neurim, accept the neediest and most difficult students ages 12
to 18. Some children come because parents can't or
won't take care of them whether because of poverty or extreme dysfunction.
Some of the students come on their own incentive trying to
break free of hopelessness. Then there are the Naiache (we will go
up) kids. Parents are sending their beloved children to Israel alone
because of the increasingly difficult life for Jews in places like
Russia and Estonia. A full 30% of our student population is made up from the former Soviet Union.
In addition, hundreds of day students want to study at our
villages schools. The parents of upper middle class Zicharon Ya'akov
petitioned the ministry of Education to allow their children to attend the excellent award- winning high school at Meir Shefeyah.
Those students and the boarding students both benefit
from the mix of culture and social class.
Not all of our children are Jewish. Our villages serve Bedouin and even Eritrean refugee children.
The work of Youth Aliyah is critical. Failure is not an
option. Israel needs physically healthy adults to insure the safety and
secure future for all within her borders. By following the inspiring
footsteps of Resha Frier and Henrietta Szold, we can make real the
Zionist dream.
We can help these students by purchasing Youth Aliyah
Certificates which are good for any occasion:
Small Certificates are
$5.00 and up plus postage. Large Certificates are $15.00 and up plus postage.

DEFINING ZIONISM IN THE 21ST CENTURY- A HADASSAH SERIES
New Dr. Yehuda Kurtzer:
Different Values, Different Zionist Politics
Is Israel as important as it was a generation — or two — ago? Dr.
Yehuda Kurtzer, president of the Shalom Hartman Institute of North
America, joins Hadassah 's Defining Zionism in an exploration of
generational shifts around Israel, taking a close look at the values we
must recognize and wrestle with to bridge divides and advance meaningful
conversations. In the Diaspora, feelings of tensions and pride come
naturally to all who are stakeholders in Israel and the future of
Zionism.
