YOUR HELP IS NEEDED FOR THE P.A.D. PROJECT INITIATIVE !
P.A.D. PROJECT INITIATIVE (Providing Access and Dignity) CO-SPONSORED BY HADASSAH, NATIONAL COUNCIL OF JEWISH WOMEN & TEMPLE SINAI WOMEN'S CHAVURAH January 24, 2017 7:00 P.M. Temple Sinai, 363 Penfield Rd.
Government programs like SNAP or food stamps don't
provide for feminine hygiene products. Many underserved women and girls
regularly miss work and school during their menstrual cycles. They
can't afford tampons and pads. In response to this need, the National
Council of Jewish Women's local section developed the P.A.D. project,
which stands for Providing Access and Dignity to women and girls during
their monthly cycles.
On Jan. 24th, we'll assemble personal
hygiene kits for women and girls in local high schools and service
organizations, like RAIHN.
What's Needed: Generous donations of
packages of individually wrapped pads and panty liners. Use those
newspaper coupons or buy at Sam's Club, B.J,'s or Costco. Bring your
donations to the Temple Sinai drop off boxes provided at both entrances,
to Hadassah meetings, to my house (68 Waterworks Dr. East Rochester),
or call me for a pickup.
Park near the second entrance (Social Hall) and come into that doorway
Let's
show our big hearts! What a wonderful, practical and caring way to
help women in our community! Questions? Call Monika Katzel, Chair

PRESIDIUM MESSAGE
A new Hadassah year is beginning. We are faced with leadership,
fundraising and membership challenges, but also with wonderful
opportunities for growth in member participation, leadership development
and giving options. Hadassah has a 100+ year enviable history of
life-saving and life-enhancing work in medicine, education, youth
rescue, and land reclamation in Israel, as well as Jewish youth identity
strengthening through camps and educational programs, adult leadership
training, health education and advocacy in the US.
Over
these many historic years of nation building, conflicts, huge economic
growth, immigrant ingathering and land reclamation in Israel, Hadassah
played a major role in providing medical care, employment and necessary
funds in making dreams happen. The unwavering devotion of Hadassah
members brought about the success of all of these missions to which we
are linked emotionally and financially.
Our ongoing
efforts are needed. Each member fuels the organization with spirit,
high energy, leadership, sweat equity and funds. We are grateful for
our Rochester Hadassah leadership at all levels. But we need every
member to stay committed and involved. Let us combine our efforts to
keep Rochester moving forward in strength. Your creative ideas, your
volunteer and professional experiences, your leadership skills, and the
gifts of your hearts and hands are welcome and necessary. Please
respond to the call and let us know how you can contribute to the future
of our Chapter.
The 2017 shared Presidium leadership is
available to all of you, anytime. Communicate your ideas, concerns and
offers of help with any one of us. We look forward to your input,
support and participation at meetings, programs, and events.
TOGETHER we remain strong.

ROCHESTER SCHOOL #3 MITZVAH PROJECT UPDATE
"My name is Dahviasha. I am a student in Miss Berntsen's class. I
wanted to take a moment to thank you for all the the wonderful supplies
you donated to the class and I appreciated it more than you'll ever
know".
On
Dec. 13th, the Rochester Hadassah Mitzvah Makers visited Nicole
Berntsen's class at School 3 to provide a fun morning for her delightful
3rd graders. Linda Rapkin started with a lesson of cinquain - a
5 stanza writing project the kids had to create. Divided into groups,
the kids then made fleece scarves, thumb print holiday cards for their
families, foam cup snowmen with scarves and ear muffs, and finished by
decorating and eating cookies. Carol Shulman shared the book, The
Mitten. The students also received fleece gloves and hand knit hats as
gifts, to go along with the scarves they so proudly made and wore in
class. The Hadassah volunteers were rewarded with big smiles, cheers of
"thank you" and hugs all around. As we were leaving, we were presented
with a book of thank you letters written by the students - each page
decorated with hearts, smiling students and even Stars of David. Each
student so carefully wrote about the school supplies that were delivered
in Sept. - donated by our Hadassah members. Dahviasha's letter so
sweetly demonstrates how much our donations are appreciated.
Supplies
and reading books are accepted all year by Hadassah. These donations
assure that these beautiful youngsters have the necessary tools for
classroom learning. For more information, contact Monika Katzel,
Mitzvah Chair (203-1200, lesterkatzel@earthlink.net.

YOUTH ALIYAH MIRACLES: YOUR GENEROSITY MAKES IT POSSIBLE!!
MIRACLE NUMBER ONE:
Her name is Hadassah. This high school senior was abandoned by her father when she was small. Then her mother went away. She used to sleep all day and cut school. She underwent drug rehab. Today, a student at the Meir Shfeya Youth Village, she' a star. She's finishing high school and is a captain of the dodge ball team. She's hoping to become a combat soldier in the IDF, but before will spend an additional year volunteering--giving back to the community. Her positive self-esteem and the help of the therapy available to all students have improved the situation at home, too. She and her mom and siblings lite their Hanukkah candles and ate sufganiot at home this Hanukkah. "My whole life is so much better. Thank you Shfeya and thank you, to the women of Hadassah who make this possible. I know I have a future!" What were the odds of her overcoming abandonment, depression and drugs while struggling with the regular issues of being a teen? The change is nothing short of miraculous.
Think about the work you do for Hadassah through Youth Aliyah. Nissim are miracles. They don't happen in a vacuum. They require human endeavor. Barbara Sofer, Israel Director of Public Relations, Hadassah
MIRACLE NUMBER TWO:
Almost from its inception, Youth Aliyah has received signifigant
support from Hadassah. The three villages sponsored by
Hadassah: Meir Shfeyah, Remat Hadassah Szold and Hadassah Neurim, accept the neediest and most difficult students ages 12 to 18. Some children come because their parents can't or won't
take care of them, whether because of poverty or extreme dysfunction. Some students come on their own initiative trying to
break free of hopelessness.
Eli Mantason, one of nine children of
Ethiopian immigrant parents, had to drop out of school at age 8 in order to help support his family. After working
in the Netayna open market for several years, he decided that he wanted a
future, so he found his way to the Meir Shfeyah Youth Village. Eli is now a criminal defense attorney, a
husband, married to a fellow student from the village, and a father.
He has been " paying forward" his good fortune by finding other lost boys and bringing them to Youth Aliyah.

DEFINING ZIONISM IN THE 21ST CENTURY- A HADASSAH SERIES
New Hen Mazzig
Making Zionism a Model for Everyone
“Zionism is a model for everyone,” says Hen Mazzig,
an Israeli writer, international speaker, social media activist and
Israel advocate. In Defining Zionism, Hadassah’s provocative dialogue
series, the former IDF commander speaks about finding common ground to
promote Zionism and fight BDS, moving beyond misconceptions, and how his
deeply personal version of Zionism has been shaped by the history of
his family, Berber Jews from Tunisia who were among 850,000 Jewish
refugees from Arab countries, and by his experience in a special IDF
humanitarian unit where he was able to protect Palestinian civilians
while taking care of our homeland and working for peace.
