PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

RozBaum.JPG

This is my final message to you as President of the Rochester Chapter of Hadassah; my third and final year in this role ends on 31 December 2016. These three years seem to have passed quickly in some ways and have been enlightening in many ways. Most things have gone very well while others have had minor problems.

I am especially appreciative of the officers and committee members who have worked diligently, efficiently, and effectively in their respective positions to support Hadassah locally and internationally. They have brought us many excellent programs, luncheons, and dinners to celebrate one another, our holidays, our diversity, and to foster and support Israel with a focus on the Hadassah Hospitals, Youth Aliyah, and Hadassah College. We have raised a large sum of money over these years through many activities and events that include our annual Medical Center Party.

We have one more event during this calendar year—the annual Chanukah brunch which will include the installation of our new officers for 2017. Once again the brunch will be held at Monroe’s Restaurant on Monroe Avenue (former location of the Spring House). Details are to be found elsewhere in this newsletter. I hope to see many of you at this event which occurs prior to Chanukah (first candle is lit the night of 24 December).

I urge you to fully support the new officers in their endeavors as they assume their positions officially on 1 January 2017. Serving as leaders of this chapter is not an easy task especially because we are not getting any younger, and many young women are so caught up in their own professional work and families that they have much less time to devote to other activities including Hadassah. The future of the Rochester Chapter of Hadassah requires each of us to become involved in the recruitment of younger women (specifically those of ages 40-60). I ask each of you to help in recruiting new members.

I leave you with a simple expression of “THANK YOU!”

B’Shalom,

Roz

Dear Members of the Rochester Chapter of Hadassah,

As another Hadassah year is coming to an end, we are working on the chapter board and committees for 2017. We are reaching out to everyone, hoping to add new members to the board and to our committees.

As you know, a strong and active Chapter and Board can only continue to offer you education programs, social and fun events and other opportunities, with the support of willing volunteers to coordinate it all. Those of us who have had the privilege to serve on the Chapter Board also know it is a terrific way to make connections with wonderful people!

We hope you will consider accepting a board or committee position for the coming year. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Monika Katzel, (585) 203-1200 or lesterkatzel@earthlink.net, or Marcia Gabrilove Ladin, (585) 820-5284 or mladin@hadassah.org.

 FROM OUR NATIONAL PRESIDENT:
SPEAK OUT FOR HADASSAH VALUES

Hadassah has never, and will not now, sit idly by in the face of discrimination, hate or intolerance. We have grave concerns about the appointment of Stephen Bannon as White House chief strategist and senior counsel, based on his previous positions and statements about specific groups of people in our country. We call on our federal officials in the White House and Congress to condemn hatred.

Let's join together as each of us contacts our members in Congress to stand up for equality and oppose prejudice. Call your legislators or send them a letter via our National Action Center to make sure they know we will continue to fight for the empowerment of ALL women regardless of gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or party affiliation. Tell them that preserving and protecting women's health, well-being, access to opportunity and safety are not negotiable.

The new White House and Congress will begin governing our nation in January. In February, you can meet your legislators at home during their district work recess through our Day in the District program. These in-district visits have a proven track record for advocacy success. Now is the time to take full advantage of our training and network to make your voice heard. We have Hadassah members in every Congressional district in America, and we want every one of those districts to mobilize in support of Hadassah values.

I am ready to stand alongside you as we advocate for the rights of ALL people, as we combat anti-Semitism at home and abroad, as we protect equity for women, and as we strengthen the U.S.- Israel relationship.

B'Shalom

Ellen Hershkin
National President

In our youth villages children live in the harmony we seek for our people and the world.

FIRES IN ISRAEL- FROM OUR NATIONAL PRESIDENT

As fires rage across Israel, especially in Haifa, our thoughts are with the families, firefighters and emergency responders in harm's way.

The hospitals of Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) at Ein Kerem and Mt. Scopus are playing a crucial role in the emergency response. The Medical Director at Hadassah Ein Kerem, Dr. Yoram Weiss, tells us that they've prepared medical backup for other hospitals and for the injured. First responders and emergency teams are working tirelessly with the civilian population, as Israeli police are relentless in their efforts to bring the arsonists responsible to justice. A dozen have already been arrested.

I am appalled by the news of cheers from some social media sectors in the Arab world, just as I am encouraged that Israel has accepted Palestinian Authority firefighting teams.

We are grateful today for all kept safe from the flames of the fires raging in Israel, and to each of the nations — Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Jordan, Palestinian Authority, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United States — who came to Israel's aid by sending firefighters and equipment.

We pray for the fires to go out in Israel, and for peace.

Ellen Hershkin
National President
