PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
As I
write this message I have been home from Israel for one week. The Temple
B’rith Kodesh 12-day trip was fantastic in spite of the unusual heat
that we found there; an example was 111-degree heat that we experienced
in Jerusalem!
Six years had passed since my most recent visit,
and, as always, changes have occurred throughout the country that make
it seem as if I have never been there before. (This was my 17th trip to
Israel.) For instance, the archaeological dig at the southern end of the
Temple mount has expanded dramatically; the town of Mod’in has grown
from a village or settlement into a full-fledged city.
We were
able to experience both Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut in two
different locations in Jerusalem with young and old alike. The sadness
of the first was apparent everywhere we went on Memorial Day as the dead
of all Israel’s wars were remembered in solemn ceremonies and a
national moment of silence. Then, once the Ma’ariv service ended, the
mood of the entire country shifted into one of joyous celebration of
Independence Day with singing and dancing.
This month we
celebrate both a religious holiday and our Hadassah Chapter’s major
fund-raising event. First comes Shavuos which is the festival that gave
us the Torah and helped make us into a united people.
June also
brings the Rochester Chapter to our largest and most important fund
raiser—our Medical Center party. If you are able to purchase a partial
or whole ticket for this event, I urge you to do so to support the
medical work being done there. Your support will be appreciated more
than you could possibly know. We also would like to see you attend the
supper party (at an additional cost) at Irondequoit Country Club on June 14th.
Until next month, B’Shalom,
Roz

FASHION SHOW UPDATE
April marked another
successful Hadassah Fashion Show at Irondequoit Country Club. Loud
applause and cheers greeted the 11 members of the Rochester community
who took time from their professional and volunteer lives to model.
Larry Fine, Dr. Ross Elkin, Dennis Lohouse, Josh Nichols, Rabbi Peter
Stein, the Honorable Sandra Frankel, the Honorable Karen Morris,
Tracie Glazer, Rabbi Rachel Smookler, and Barbara Morgenstern chose
casual, business and dress apparel from SteinMart to display to the
exuberant crowd.
Over 3 dozen
generous vendors and individuals provided a wide variety of fabulous
raffle prizes. Krystal Ellis, Director of Operations of Wilson
Commence Park, provided a moving presentation about the agency that
provides services to needy resident women and children. Attendees
brought donations of toiletries and cleaning products, items not
covered by SNAP (food stamps).
Proceeds from the
Fashion Show and raffle were directed to the Hadassah Medical
Organization-The Sarah Wetzman Davidson Tower in Jerusalem.
Please express your
appreciation to our wonderful vendors and individuals who supported
Hadassah with their gifts to the Fashion Show raffle:

YOUTH ALIYAH/CHILDREN AT RISK
In
a perfect world, childhood is carefree and fun, filled with learning,
doting parents and joy. But in the real world, too many children live in
homes darkened by fear, terror and deprivation. These children in urgent need of rescue find refuge and
relief through Hadassah's YOUTH ALIYAH PROGRAM. The goal of YOUTH ALIYAH is to lift each child from despair to safety and hope.
By transforming lives of misery into lives of fulfillment, trust and
growth, Hadassah fulfills its Zionist mission of creating a stronger,
healthier, kinder and more inclusive Jewish state.
Purchase YOUTH ALIYAH CERTIFICATES which are good for any occasion.
Large are $15 and up; small are $5 and up. Contact Marlene Elkin 271-1871
